Longhorn Security: Real Or Just Bull? | |

Security in Longhorn will be better when the new operating system is released in 2006 than security in Windows XP, which debuted in 2001 -- or so Microsoft has promised. How much better though, is a matter of how effective Microsoft, as well as Longhorn users, will be at staying one step ahead of the hackers that will surely be gunning for Longhorn vulnerabilities. For I.T. managers planning for Longhorn deployment, the key security factor is the great unknown -- anticipating future vulnerabilities that right now are a glint in the evil eye of hackers. All I.T. can do for now is to upgrade existing systems in anticipation of Longhorn's arrival. | ||

How can you write about "Longhorn" security without mentioning large parts of "Longhorn" security?
Code Access Security? Secure Execution Environment? Application Manifests? "Longhorn will be Microsoft's first desktop OS built after they started to care about security. So I do expect Longhorn to be more secure," Pescatore added. Gee, I thought that was NT. |

Its not that they want to support legacy stuff, as who the hell does? Thats where all the hacks and workarounds come from in the MS source code. (Remeber the leak?) They dont like it anymore than anyone else, in fact they hate it more than anyone else.
Legacy stuff has stopped the world moving forward at a much faster pace and MS knows it. Somewhere, a line in the sand must be drawn. MS wanted to draw that line a lot further back than what they did in reality, but that is the reason (among others) why they still have greatest market share. Ever tried getting old stuff, or any stuff to work under Linux, as easily as it does in Windows? You have to consider both the advantages and disadvantages, and come to a compromise. Unfortuantely the biggest compromisation was at the OS itself, which leads us back to the inital problem: Security. How ironic. |

There was very little thought or research evident in this article.
I do not think nearly enough is known about Longhorn/Blackcombe to be able to speculate - I mean, my goodness, there has barely been a shred of credilble reporting about XP SP2 - most centers on pure conjecture at best. Given this, I am left to conclude that many writers have an agenda - write anything at all - just to write something, or worse, cause confusion and obfuscate what is propbably the most comprehensive development effort ever undertaken. My advice to anyone would always be to develop and build for the future...forget any and all legacy...and watch as the companies that invest in "their" futures are made both more secure and agile. In such matters it is unwise to just compete and win...one must win so big...do so well...that one's competitors are defeated, utterly - just by being very obviously better. |
