Some major Web portals are trying to get an edge in the competitive Internet search market by thinking outside of the browser. Net titans Microsoft, Yahoo and EarthLink are all considering broadening their lucrative search businesses by providing access to online searches through a "taskbar" displayed to the side or at the bottom of a PC screen, according to people familiar with the plans. Taskbar search tools are similar to popular toolbar applications that have long been available as browser add-ons, but there is an important difference: They reside in the system tray in Microsoft's Windows operating system, allowing queries independently of the browser or any other applications running on the desktop. <%=GetPoll(85)%> | ||

In order to repoly correctly to this, I am reminded of the old joke about President Reagan, when asked a question he responded "Well, yes, but no."
I can think of only one compelling reason to keep a standalone browser application: backwards compatibility with older versions of Operating Systems. As MS just learned, and tweaked their obselence schedule becasue of, Windows 98 is still in very heavy use in the corporate enterprise. For that OS, IE is a separate (but equal) application. And until all users, everywhere, are at a level beyond Windows 95/98/ME (good luck on that), the idea of "moving beyond the browser" as a stand alone application is a pipe-dream. So, until the world catches up with innovators like MS in the manner that they need to catch up, the browser is not a dead app. |

| Say for instance the search happens in the toolbar and brings back a list relavant results...where do those results open? In a 2"X3" popup bubble? Not likely. When I want to serach, I click the E button, right by the start button and "Search MSN" is right on the first page. Plus stocks, news and all the things you can gather at a glance. I dont need a search bar taking up screen space. Isnt one click away close enough? |

Cth, why does browser == stand alone browser? rob, IMO HTML rendering engine == browser. So, if you have a rendering engine, you have a browser. If HTML rendering engine != browser, please explain to me what a browser is. Microsoft's Mr. Scoble, a dork, recently stated on his blog that we are moving beyond the browser with such wonderful technologies as RSS. That's really curious, since most RSS aggregators either open a browser window to display HTML embedded in the RSS feed, embed a browser in the aggregator itself to display the HTML embedded in the feed, or both. (Mr. Scoble uses NewsGator, which creates email messages of RSS feeds, which are then displayed in Outlook, which embeds a browser to display the HTML content.) Again, one could say that HTML rendering doth not a browser make, to which I'd again respond, what doth a browser make? |

| Well, I could have called him a ****** ******-******* *******, but I figured that dork would get my point accross and still be acceptable for G-rated ears. If we compare "dork" to the things he has said about Scott McNealy, I think his statements are far more harsh than mine. |
