Interesting observations and I shared them until I bought an MPC last year as an additional PC for my kids. I upgraded the MPC to 2004 when the update was released and we use it as a content collection and distribution point on our home network. As an additional PC for our kids in pre and mid teen years, it is used that way - as an MPC. While it is doing that, it is aggregating content and storing it - depending upon what kind of content in shares around the house. We have two X-Box systems, and they get used daily - awaiting the extended device availability to add them to the list used for presentation purposes.
We thought a lot about what to add and when and really needed another PC - not realizing what benefits we would receive in the MPC - for example, we have a lot of differnet media devices - cameras, MP3 players, etc... we share out the media slots on the network and just use the MPC to access them or store media to them - it saves a lot of headaches and adds another use for the MPC. The way we use it is as much as a media file-server that uses the MPC components to collect the content for us. I suppose a lot of other devices could be used this way, or do part of it, but the MPC, at least in our case, has made this very easy to do. Oh...one thing we did do was disable the on-board NIC and add a 3COM Gig server adapter - removing the modem card that was not needed. |

NGSCB won't be widely used in the home market for some time (Probably Blackcomb timeframe). The initial version will be targeted at businesses. Even then, only certain portions of NGSCB apps will require the trusted environment, and these portions can easily be also offered in alternative forms that don't require NGSCB. By the time it becomes a significant issue, he'll have likely upgraded (or will be preparing to upgrade) his computer anyway.
Longhorn shouldn't have trouble running on his system, though not at the highest graphical settings without a GPU upgrade. |

Those are some interesting uses for the X-Box and certainly it speaks to how creatively people have extended its uses and design. The MPC bundle we bought [very rare for us, because I build all my own systems and servers, normally (though we do not build tens of thousands, the small company I own/run does build some thousands)], was very well priced and capable - at 1280.00 soup to nuts, it was hard to pass up opposite a pressing need that the MPC seemed to fit, well. I was also very intrigued by the MPC and desired to explore how as a company, we might build AV Form-Factor based MPC's to add to our exisiting line and opposite specialty segments of the networks we design and manage for businesses.
There exists a strong interest in board/conference room and learning center uses of MPC's for a variety of uses. Similarly, of all the OS'es I think that the future of the MPC is very bright and appropriate. As far as modding out the X-Box, while cool, we prefer to devote that kind of effort to different types of systems and networks. In its present form and at its price points, the X-Box is well priced, but too low-end to really push beyond its out-of-the-box configuration. I think the effort and money is better put into other areas in the home - e.g., upgrades to MPC to keep it fresh/current or in other devices. We took a couple of shuttle-like designs and worked up some good living-room/den approprite MPC's for testing and submission for certification and think that in small numbers, they can be viable - especially if tricked way up with video RAID for music and DVD storage and connected to large plasma or at least DLP capable HDTV's. |
