On the eve of the giant annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft is set to deep-six its short-lived Windows XP Media Center Edition, according to reliable industry reports received by The Register. The news follows hot on the heels of Microsoft ditching itsSmart Display (Mira), much to the chagrin of Korean LCD manufacturers. First generation Smart Displays proved no cheaper than Tablet PCs, and were just as ornery to use, Guy Kewney reported here last week. | ||

| The article you point to has nothing to do with the Media Center. I'm not saying the Reg ain't wrong, but you are pointing to MS's experiments in cable setup boxes. Quite a bit different. |

| I think that the problem with MediaCenter is that is not advertised correctly; It is not a media Hub but just a nice "combo" to be used in College or in the kids room or whenever you have space problems. Surely I would not put it in my living room. |

| I believe the issue with the Smart Displays and (questionably but theoretically) Media Centers has to do with the VERY REAL HURT felt by OEMs. |

Becker, most OEMs have completely eliminated virtually all of their product margin and are working off of operational margin. Anything which modifies a spec and (more importantly) prevents them from choice in assembling the spec'ed product (MS hasn't approved many TV tuner cards and other elements) increases costs and operational issues for them (particularly if they are given a new spec that dies a year later that never sold well in the first place but they were told was going to be pushed and was going to be huge).
So... I disagree. Any pressures on the OEMs product and operational margins can be significant. The Tablet PC and Smart Display are hardly all that different from notebooks. The pressures and costs put on an OEM are probably equal for all of these products considering the the fact that they do set an appropriate product cost for all of these configs... The point is what gets invested in operations, what choices do they need to make for specialty parts, what restrictions are put on them by MS. becker, yeah... I am serious. Not so much Dell, because Dell is the best at this... not to mention THEY HATED THESE PRODUCTS/SPECS for the longest time anyway... but yeah.
Even with an uptick this past year I bet many OEMS still had inventories well in excess of 5 weeks, sometimes in excess of 8 weeks... I bet in assembling these, getting initial productions was a slower, gradual ramp than for notebooks... Even with notebooks, even if new models are released, you can empty older existing inventories because the PC spec hasn't changed (maybe just the OS or SPs) so it isn't a problem. But how do you clear 8 weeks of inventory of a product that wasn't selling well, when your customers now know it is a DEAD specification? You don't, you eat these costs, you never achieve the type of production/operation cycle you had hoped for, etc... |
