becker, yeah... I am serious. Not so much Dell, because Dell is the best at this... not to mention THEY HATED THESE PRODUCTS/SPECS for the longest time anyway... but yeah.
Even with an uptick this past year I bet many OEMS still had inventories well in excess of 5 weeks, sometimes in excess of 8 weeks...
I bet in assembling these, getting initial productions was a slower, gradual ramp than for notebooks...
Even with notebooks, even if new models are released, you can empty older existing inventories because the PC spec hasn't changed (maybe just the OS or SPs) so it isn't a problem.
But how do you clear 8 weeks of inventory of a product that wasn't selling well, when your customers now know it is a DEAD specification? You don't, you eat these costs, you never achieve the type of production/operation cycle you had hoped for, etc...
