Intel and Microsoft are gearing up to move toward the first major overhaul of the innermost workings of the personal computer--the boundary where software and hardware meet--during 2004. The companies will begin promoting a technology specification called EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) as a new system for starting up a PC's hardware before its operating system begins loading, a process that kicks in every time a PC is switched on or restarted. | ||

#3, Just becasue Gateway are shiping it, doesnt mean anything is utilising it. They said its basically in preparation for the future.
What they mean by Microsoft will support EFI in Longhorn is that the OS will be able to speak the same language as the EFI and thus communicate. No OS that Im aware of can do this so far, and there is no clear specification for EFI laid down as yet. And what is this obvious security risk? Just because people can maybe write (malicious) preboot software doesnt mean they can flash your BIOS to make it work.......... |

| I think that one of the things that Microsoft means by Longhorn support is that you may be able to "see" the computer using remote desktop services when it is powered on instead of now when the operating system starts. This will facilitate better support at lower cost particularly in the corporate environment. |

As someone who works 250-300 service calls a month via Remote Desktop Service or VNC, I can assure you I would LOVE the ability to have visual control of a machine from the moment the user hits the power button :) TL |

#10 guyess you watter turn off NETWORK stack in windows since it connects or attempts to connect at the boot process. beyond that you should confiugre a fire wall that does filter out outgoing connections anyway.
BTW there is already a firewall at the EFI level which can be configured at start up. The enviroment is setup to be secure. Much more secure than a Bios platform because it is designed the idea of a managed enviroment. Well I should correct one item above. there is a difference between conneciton to the net and connecting to the inra net and that is what it wil connect to first. #9 ain't that the truth:) BTW folks EFI is on every Intanic that is sold. so it already being tested. and the envirmonet is not worse or better than Open Firmware which provides the same type of functionality. So if you don't like the idea on the PC. Don't ever buy a Mac or a Sun Platform non of IBM busniness platforms. based on its Power PC. El |
