A few things don't make too much sense here...
Yukon is targetted for 2004. Kodiak is targetted for 2006. Is it likely that Yukon won't be ready for Kodiak? WinFS, so far as has been revealed, is targetted at the client OS. Kodiak is not a client app. Is it reasonable for Kodiak to use a store targetted for client apps? I'd accept the argument that Outlook should use WinFS, but that argument that Kodiak should use WinFS seems rather foolish to me. Microsoft hasn't simply folded SQL Server "Yukon" Enterprise Edition into WinFS, so anything that requires an enterprise level database, quite obviously, shouldn't be using WinFS as the store. ...or did I miss something? |

I don't think WinFS is solely for the client (althought it may be where we see it first). For the values of WinFS to shine through on the corporate side, it will also need to be on the server. |

I didn't mean that WinFS was solely for the client, but we aren't expect an LH server until about a year or so after LH client (a la XP/Server 2003). Well, I'm not expecting it anyway.
Currently WinFS is only enabled for the document directories in the LH PDC bits. The implication is that it is only for user data. Other than a file server, what benefit does WinFS offer on the server? I'm not saying there aren't any, I just can't think of any offhand. And, for the record, I don't see much reason for Kodiak to use WinFS. It would make sense to use Yukon, but not a subset of Yukon (e.g. WinFS). Can someone explain a few use cases where Kodiak on WinFS make sense? |
