The second Windows XP service pack will include a number of changes designed to allay security fears. A Microsoft executive has said the company will launch Service Pack 2 for Windows XP in December, months earlier than the company forecast on its Service Pack roadmap. At the Citrix iForum in Florida on Tuesday, Microsoft's corporate vice president of content, Richard Kaplan, who is in charge of the Microsoft.com and Windows Update Web sites, told delegates that Windows XP SP2 would be available by the end of the year. I think SP2 should come in 2 editions: Fat-Dumb-And-Happy Edition, and I-Actually-Read-The-Readme-Files Edition. That's exactly what the download links should be labelled.
Fat-Dumb-And-Happy Edition will turn on the firewall. If it breaks something, the user won't be the one who cares, because this type of user always calls somebody else whenever something goes wrong. The IT person called will most likely be the sort of lazy complainer who wants to explain to the user that Microsoft is an evil moron who wants to ruin the user's computer (and interrupt the IT person's surfing for porn), but this type of user doesn't really care what the heck is said by the geek. This user will just smile patiently and pretend to listen until the geek goes back to wherever geeks go. I-Actually-Read-The-Readme-Files Edition will be an amazing 0KB in size because Microsoft doesn't actually need to post it. Absolutely no human has read a Readme file from any software vendor since the late 80's. Think I'm kidding?
