I totally agree with ya schphbeckler... Microsoft needs to create a group for home (or just more priveleged) users that is not quite as priveleged as Administrators, and make that the default for Longhorn Home users. An executable "review" and authorization process of some sort would be nice also. No, I don't mean code signing and certificates... | The problem is that users with lower privilages can't install critical updates. In my office we have tried to lock down settings for our field office userrs, but then get stuck with trying to find a wayto give them enough power to download and install patches. If I remember correctly, even AV programs can not install updates on some of the more locked down levels. |

That's a big problem that I'm facing. How do you get Norton Antivirus to automatically update the antivirus definitions when the computer is used by members of the Users group?

Thanks for the backup PT, good time to break your silence!
Anyhow, the Power Users group is in Win2k and XP strictly for backwards compatability with NT; it's been deprecated. With Active Directory, it's possible to delegate most of the permissions that "normal" non-priveleged users would need, but in a workgroup or at home where there's no one managing security policy, the only real option is to run in the Administrators group. Which for the average Joe is probably a very bad idea. |
