WordPerfect's New Version Is No Improvement | |

If there were such a thing as a hospice for software, WordPerfect would have checked in a long time ago. Its fall from the summit to the cellar of the productivity-software market has few parallels in the business. But the program -- owned by Corel since 1996 and now sold mostly as part of an office suite -- has soldiered on. In the past two years it's even gained ground, thanks to aggressive bundling deals that put it on the hard drives of computers from Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard and Sony. The new WordPerfect Office 11, however, isn't about to win any more converts. It offers few major changes (and fewer still that are relevant to home users) while leaving long-standing flaws. If you get a copy free on your next computer, you won't be terribly disappointed, but I can't recommend buying it over the competition.

Corel's problem was/is leadership. Copland kept changing directions. First to Java, then to Linux, then he was replaced. News reports today are suggesting that Corel shares are going to be bought up by a VC company and turned back into a private company.

Paul,
I would not include Netware. My company is moving all of our file and print to win2k, but not because Netware is technically inadequate. On the contrary, we feel Netware and NDS are more stable, mature and easier to use than win2k. Budget cuts have mandated that we limit the variety of systems we support. We use Exchange and IIS, so it was easier to go all Microsoft than all Novell. I have not used Win2k3, so ADS may be much improved there. I would also add Quicken to your list. It's on the downslope for the same reason as Lotus 123, taking its user-base for granted. Ted |
