Seth H. Weintraub: Microsoft, according to some, is having success with its Laptop Hunter ad campaign. Personally, I think the ads are laughable at best and purposely misleading at worst. Regardless, it looks like we're going to see more of the same attack ads. The difference, however, is that Microsoft has moved its cross hairs from Apple to Google.

Effective is the word he was looking for.

#3: You sure it wasn't 'invective'?
I loved the guy's comment on how MS will happily spend a million a day in a futile attempt to unseat Google, all after laying off staff. Meanwhile, Google spends far, far less on ads with half the budget used to attract talent. So, in other words, Google spends ad money to make its products better while MS spends ad money to make you think its products are better.

#5: Joe uses one of the stupidest analogies ever. Sure, in the Bible David got lucky and beat Goliath. In the real world, Goliath crushes David 999,999 times out of a million. Microsoft is David.

The author makes his living off of Google and it is good and proper that he is an advocate.
People using a platform do so for a reason and they find and extend value from the platforms they support.
We should recognize and respect his advocacy for what it is - and expect the same from him and others opposite our own platfrom selections.
We will however, not receive that consideration. Regardless, we should extend it.

Actually Latch, history records that "peltasts" like David, favorably influenced numerous key battles - Alexander at Issus and later Gaugamela, employed 30,000 and 69,000 of them respectively. After throwing their short spears, peltasts would resort to the sling and severely disrupt enemy formations and cavalry units. David would have been exceptionally skilled with the sling and able to strike very small target areas with lethal force well outside the range of the weapons Goliath would have carried and had mastered. Often hidden and attacking from blinds or other concealment, peltasts would engage similarly outside the range of enemy weapons.
Armies throughout the 3 to 1st centuries BC used them to history making effect.

"Yeah Bing is so dumb compared to "Yahoo" and "Google". "
I agree! And only you and Lloyd will be using Bing telling us how innovative and amazing it is.

#9 I look forward to a search engine that keeps the ads and crap sites to a minimum. Google is getting pretty useless. Soooooo many of the sites it points you to are just there to sell Google ads.

#11 No-one is making you use Google there champ... use Live search - it'll give you the same results as Bada Bing! Bada Boom! There's plenty of search engines out there - one for just about every unique way you want to search. Why are you using a search engine that you consider useless? I on the other hand like to find results relevant to what I'm looking for and for me, time is important, so I'll continue to use Google which is by far and beyond the best search engine available right now.

#8, Bobs, it is incredibly useful and seldom surprises me how relevant its lessons are. We fall back on it all the time in everything we do... our own short history rooted in the fabric of time, as it were.
Chris, we'll use it and test it and study it, and then we'll leverage it alongside the myriad of other technologies we use - mixing them in dozens of ways and using what works best. We won't reject it ahead of time and instead evaluate it objectively. If it's good we'll say so, if it's bad, we'll say why and use something else.
It is true that Microsoft software is good in so many areas that as professionals, we'll consider anything new. Experience will support our decision to consider new offerings at least, and perhaps use them as they evolve. It's worked well for our customers and we've been able to build lasting solutions on the platform. I think it's time we stopped justifying such decision and got back to sharing what we do and why - as it is inarguable that positive results are obtained. Remember, it was not so long ago that Google was nothing and Yahoo search reigned supreme. That changed and things can and will change again.

#13 I look forward to your unbiased opinion :) And sure... not that long ago Google was nothing... as long as your definition of not that long is 9 years... which normally wouldn't count for a lot but in terms of the internet, it's actually a decent amount of time.

#12 " No-one is making you use Google there champ"
No they don't.
But why do they go out of their way to make you feel like an idiot for even trying their search engine? Why do they blatantly index all those millions of fake websites whose sole purpose is to carry Google ads and divert you from real websites with real information that you need?

#8: I believe Alexander's force was only about 50,000 total at Gaugamela. Less than 10,000 were peltists.
