MS InfoPath: Too complex to follow? | |

Microsoft next week will release the first widely available beta of InfoPath, a new application for organizing and sharing data that will be included in Office 11, but analysts say the learning curve will be steep. The Redmond, Wash.-based company is positioning the product, in part, as a tool to let data migrate from one application in Office to another through Extensible Markup Language (XML). With InfoPath, a sales manager could create a form where team members submit numerical data from Excel and notes from Word. The two applications would work harmoniously on the same page and allow for automatic updates. | ||

Wow, software that's too complex for average users? That's unusual!
A few days ago, I got a call from an executive, an articulate woman who makes eight figures and gets a lot of respect from her peers. The degrees and certificates on the wall of her office reflect a very well educated professional. She was using a piece of software that she had been using successfully for years. Today, she told me, it suddenly stopped doing anything. She would click where it said to click, but nothing would happen. Eventually, I decided that the phone call was going nowhere, so I went to her desk. She was in the online help for the program. The help showed a picture of the program's toolbar. There was a line pointing to a button, and some text which explained that you could run reports by clicking that button. She had been clicking the button in the online help over and over again, but no reports ever came out. Before I could say anything, she even told me that she changed the toner cartridge in her laser printer, as if to let me know that she had already tried the easy stuff and I could go ahead and start with advanced troubleshooting steps. I haven't seen InfoPath at all, but I'm willing to agree that it will be too complex for her. |

| I have been using InfoPath (Xdocs) for a few months now. It is NOT as complicated as this article makes it out to be. If you follow a couple tutorials, you will be able to use most of the general features. |
