Could a wily little penguin disrupt Microsoft's desktop empire? The Linux operating system has made impressive gains on corporate servers, but so far has failed to crack the desktop market. More than 90 per cent of the world's personal computers run on Windows. And Linux is still considered too technically complex for the average computer user. But that is changing, especially outside the United States. Government agencies in Europe, China, India and South America have started to encourage Linux over proprietary software because it provides cost savings, freedom from reliance on a single software vendor, and flexibility. | ||

The main reason why Linux hasn't caught on at home is the same reason OS/2 flopped. No hardware vendor support to speak of. While I use Mandrake 9.0 as a secondary OS, it still doesn't support my Audigy 2, my Intel PC Pocket Camera, USB Visioneer 4800 Flatbed scanner.
Also, many more home users play games, and many of them have not been ported to Unix. Anyone play Warcraft III, SOFII, The Sims, Dungeon Siege, using Linux? No, not a contender by a long shot for the home user. It is great for wordprocessing, spreadsheets, setting up a small business FTP site, etc... you catch my drift, right? <g> |

ahh no, that would be that the average home user is not capable of managing it as easily as they do windows. |

what a joke. any IT manager that would inflict desktop linux deserves his inevitable fate - being layed off. |

I smell your own smoke screen baarod. Kids are playing with linux because of the abusive treatment of old fart professors? Heh? We're talking kids not in college, where talking kids that don't listen to their professors, where talking professors that are choosing to teach linux not because it was also crammed down their throats, but because they choose to.
The only people that have no problem come from Unix shops? Please. I built my first Linux web server in '97 because I was sick of Windows, not because I knew anything about Unix. I also did it because I could easily find the info I needed from the community. Windows never, not then, not now, developed a focused, close community? Too bad for Windows--they should do that because there is one for linux. People put up with Windows because it sucked less than DOS? Maybe you shouldn't have been on DOS in the first place. Yes, it brought computing to the masses, but not to the data centers that never used DOS or Windows; only now when MS is beginning to penetrate the data center market, they are faced with linux in the data center which is improving rapidly as well. So, anyway, where is the smokescreen about history repeating itself?--I believe that was rhordjr's point--how have you proven that history will not repeat itself? |

You know we should all be happy.. the compatition between the two is making both products BETTER then each of them would be without each other.
Linux.. has it's places NT... has it's places DOS.. lol funny enough still has it's places.. |
