Microsoft's latest biennial remodel of Office is now in beta testing. We took it out for a spin. Result? Except for a major overhaul of Outlook, the upgrade looks much like today's model--on the surface.
But under the hood, the new version of the market-leading productivity suite--which is due to ship in mid-2003 and requires Windows XP or Win 2000--introduces changes that could eventually be significant for individuals and businesses alike.

I have been running the beta for 6 weeks now. Great features indeed. A bit quicker than all previous versions of Microsoft Office, and substantially faster than StarOffice and OpenOffice. I also found that system resources use is improved (much less than XP). Not to mention that the number of bugs during this beta has been substantially less than in the previous Office 10 beta. It's pretty damn rock solid. (I had been beta testing OpenOffice and spent more crashing than testing...which is still the case even after the publicly released version with updates).
The greatest thing about it is the native XML support and coexistence with XDocs. Unfortunately for the OpenOffice group, they have much more catching up to do to come close to penetrating Microsoft Office's public strong hold. Once OpenOffice offers a similarly equipped XML option (and as advanced) and the ability to properly import Office docs/spreadsheets/presentation files, it remains a failure.
If you have an opportunity be sure to sign up for the second beta.

Fred,
Feel free to believe me if you desire ;-). Apparently "coolbe_va" has not used the beta. If they have, they will supply me with their Beta ID and name and I can verify that they are an actual beta tester for Office. I have direct contacts who can answer that for me, as well as provide me with any/all bugs that they have submitted.

Well said Kevin.
It appears that some people have a goal in life to just TROLL newsgroups because...mm...they get their rocks off?
I don't know, but it takes away from a very possible stimulating conversation amongst the mature posters, and veteran posters (such as myself...user # 37!).

Jagged, you and I will always be veterans (in case you forgot, I used to post under KvalCom, but someone from behind the scenes allowed me to change my name without losing my spot as #37 :-) here, and those like bwoa spout nonsense for the sake of defending Microsoft.
Makes me <sigh> 24-7 man!

I too find Outlook 11 disappointing and I've never used Linux.
The Vertical viewer is OK, but customizing the messages column layout is too difficult.
Having Word as your editor should not cause Word to be loaded into memory automatically with Outlook. It should load and unload as needed.
One bug I pointed out to the Outlook 98 alpha team still exists.
Outlook's integration with IE is pathetic. When I right click on a link in an Outlook email I should see the same little popup window as if I did it in IE: Open, Open in New Window, etc
And the contact's nickname field still does not resolve ... ARGH!!!!!!!!
But, I won't use any other mail client. It's still the best.

I was a beta tester for Office 2000, XP and I am now testing Office 11. We are all entitled to express our opinions and so I have no problems with people saying that they don't like some features in a software package. What really upset me are people spreading misleading information like #3. Being under NDA I am not going any further but I strongly believe that people should clear explain if they post are posting opinions or reporting facts.

#17 Are you an official beta tester? The reason I am asking it is because, in case you are I would like to know more about the problems you are experiencing.

#20 Again, I am not here to debate personal experiences with the software but I reiterate that my opinion about this release , based both on my previous experiences and on the fact that we are at Beta 1 stage, is extremely positive.

Same here, I've had only positive experience with Office 11 (not to say I don't think there is room for improvement)...
Frtiz: How long did it take you to do the "homework assignments"? I need to set some time aside to actually do them, but am very busy with school and work.

CPU, not too long for the first ones, the latest was a little bit "weird" and took longer. LOL

Cools' assessment about the XML in Microsoft Office (the 3rd generation of XML in MS Office now)is inaccurate. It is much more mature, advanced and prominent than the StarOffice/OpenOffice offerings. Please don't spread FUD.

kev, sorry for my absense. Contrary to seemingly popular belief, I do hav a life. For most of yesterday and today I didn't have Internet access.
Two chats ago, I said that we should treat the ActiveWin community someone like the Survivor TV show. Every so often we vote people of the site. For our purposes, all aliases should count as the same user. beeyp, bas, eastbam, et. are the same user. Eagle, bwoa, etc....
Custom polls would be interesting on this site (kinda like on Yahoo groups). Let's have some feedback, oh community, what do you think? Whom would you vote off the "island" ?

Oh, to bas, mhfm, eagle (sry, may have missed one), it really wouldn't be funny to vote me off, but if you want to be "funny" *rolls eyes* feel free to make that "joke".
