Microsoft on Wednesday will unveil a new instant messaging service aimed at corporate customers, jump-starting belated efforts by the software giant to tap the fast-growing, new market for the hugely popular technology. As previously reported by CNET News.com, MSN Messenger Connect for Enterprises will add security, archiving and other message-management features sought by companies that are beginning to warm to the idea of allowing employees to conduct business over instant messaging (IM) networks. | ||

I'm not sure how well the 'recording and archiving' aspects of this are going to go over with users, and I think there may be new Legal territory being opened up here.

| I don't care one darn bit what anyone says, IM does NOT have a place in the Enterprise. IM is just an excuse to not do your work and to chat/flirt with employees. Just say "no." |

We've been looking at installing an IM for our department. Messenger won't work as we can't setup our own Active Directory and Exchange 2000 servers... just need something simple.
I'm curious about this one they are putting into .Net server... going to look into it. We'd be fine with running beta software, since it's a development environment. |

Just say "no." -quote More or less I agree with this.. wtf can you do via IM in most corporate environments that you cannot do with a simple email or phone call? What is 5-10 seconds too long to wait? I know some execs who's sole purpose in using IM is specificlly to AVIOD having records in email, or records of phone calls, that could be asked for by a judge... is this really the proper use of im. My lord the interuptions from im's alone would drive me nuts.. I really dont see how this adds much value in a corporate environment....being in IT though I see plenty of people abusing the living sheet out IM. It's really too bad that I cannot block it all entirely. |

I think IM is very valuable in the enterprise. I find it much less disruptive than a phone call. It is more interactive than email.
I know it is abused, but that is quite a different matter. Internet access can be abused too, but that doesn't mean it isn't often times very valuable. |
