Thanks, Louis Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's endlessly repeated claim that 95 percent of the world's computers run on Windows, for example, required pretending that Apple, Sun Microsystems and Palm do not compete with Windows because their computers are not "Intel compatible." That is like saying Campbell's has 95 percent of the soup business if we just leave out Progresso because their soup styles are Italian, Healthy Choice because their soup is dietary, and all other soups because they are dry mixes, imported or frozen. | ||

Alas, I don't really find this guys arguments compelling.
Microsoft clearly has a monopoly on x86 desktop operating systems, and I think those that deny that are grasping at straws that don't really need to be grasped at. I've already made my arguments regarding the case, so I won't repeat them, but I don't think I will bookmark this article in my "MS Defense Library" of bookmarks. :-) |

Jackson could have easily included Apple, Sun and others into the desktop market and still proved that Microsoft had a 95% market share.
I don't understand where this guy get's off using Palm, though. That's a different market. |

#4 - Funny, I can open Word and PowerPoint files in a wide variety of software, including many free, open source applications.
Microsoft did nothing to prevent the reverse engineering of their file formats. In fact, the next version of office uses a 100% XML based file format... not because Microsoft wants competitors to be able to open up Word documents, but because they want to be able to facilitate the conversion of Office documents into many other forms (via XSLT, and similar technologies), thereby making office an even more ubiquitous software suite. At any rate, I can think of many applications that don't have an open file format. In fact, most applications don't have an open format. Photoshop, Quicken, and even Acrobat! Those are all very popular applications... indeed, near monopolies (except for Quicken, perhaps) in their respective market... shall we force them to open their formats? |

First this article is about OS, not applications. If anyone said MS did anything illegal with trying to keep office selling like crazy is definitely against capitalism. There has always been a choice that runs on x86 and still is (it's not MS fault for competitors not creating great alternatives). MS does not have to provide third party integration, even though it does with the ability save as RTF or WordPerfect.
Second, I agree with the author about the fact the same competitors that didn't get accounted for as being in the same market, are the same people suing MS. Funny isn't it? Humor |
