Microsoft is investigating a security breach on a server that hosts its Windows beta community, which allows more than 20,000 Windows users a chance to test software that is still in development. As a result of the break-in, Microsoft advised beta testers to change their passwords late last week. However, company spokesman Rick Miller downplayed the significance of the incident, saying the online trespasser didn't get access to the company's crown jewels: its source code. "They are not grabbing code; they are grabbing product, and it's going to be buggy and it's going to have problems," he said. "This is obviously not good, but it's not terrible either." | ||

| I'm surprised Microsoft has asked you to change it before, adam. If you are going to password protect something, you should make sure that the passwords are changed regularly. |

| I'd like to see Windows 2005. Just look at how many people installed Microsoft SideShow. It is slated, supposedly, to be included in Longhorn. I think there are a lot of people very interested in seeing what the new version of Windows will look like. |

I have been beta testing for years, (over 10 now) with the same ID, and only they can change the password. They have the changed it 3 times in 10 years, this being the third. The part of the story that is missing is that passport accounts need to changed also, as MS is changing the policy to require passport accounts to access the sites. | I guess that just shows that I've not been a beta tester. I think Microsoft should force beta testers to change their passwords regularly. You can be sure that all internal users have to change their passwords regularly. |

| That is to say, if they access with Passport, they should have to change them regularly. If Microsoft is the only one who can change them, then they should change them regularly. |

They are too long to change regularly.
Hehe, on a side note, during the WinMe beta, I installed it so many times, I actually to this day still remember my old beta CD Key.... |

| How can they be too long to change regularly? It's too hard to create a new guid per tester and send it out? Protecting your assets shouldn't be too hard. |
