Microsoft makes Office more productive | |

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on Wednesday unveiled a new product intended to turn Office into a data-collection tool and boost sales of the desktop software. Ballmer introduced the product, code-named XDocs, at Gartner's Symposium and ITxpo in Orlando, Fla. XDocs is intended to make it easier for companies to generate and tabulate data using electronic forms by linking desktop documents to back-end data sources. The product is based on Extensible Markup Language (XML), which is already a popular standard for data integration. Microsoft expects to ship XDocs in mid 2003, about the same time as the next version of its productivity suite, code-named Office 11. With XDocs Microsoft hopes to expand on the success of collaborative tools such as SharePoint Team Services and SharePoint Portal Server and better position Office as a front end to customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications, according to the company. | ||

The only reason Office Web Designer didn't make it was that the Local Web Store (a desktop version of the Exchange 2000 Web Store, which also sits beneath Sharepoint Portal Server and would have replaced Outlook OST files) had too many bugs to be fixed on time.
But it looks like Local Web Store is going to ship with Office 11 because some of Outlook 11's features include features which had to be cut from Outlook 2002 due to reliance on the Local Web Store. So we may very well still see Office Web Designer (or a different name for the same thing because Microsoft loves changing names) in Office 11, or an evolved form of Office Web Designer in Sharepoint Team Services 2.0 (which will ship with Office 11 and then get bundled into Windows .NET Server 2003). Once we get a closer look at XDocs, we may find that elements of Office Web Designer wound up in XDocs, too. |

| Did you mean Outlook PST files? I've never heard of OST files. |
