Microsoft: All XML, all the time | |

Jim Allchin is not buying the argument that there's any confusion about Microsoft's message on Web services. If anything, he says, it's just the opposite. Earlier this summer, Bill Gates allowed that Microsofti's .Net Web services strategy was progressing more slowly than anticipated. But Allchin, who is responsible for Microsoft's platform strategy, maintains that the industry adoption of XML (Extensible Markup Language) Web services is proceeding apace, any speed bumps notwithstanding. "In terms of the overall vision of XML Web services, I think it's been quite successful," he says. Allchin, who recently oversaw the first update to Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, sat down with CNET News.com to discuss XML and the future of consumer-oriented Web services, a segment that was once promoted as the future of online commerce. | ||

More of Allchin's hype,
The market has taken a down turn, and so companies don't have the bugdets they used to have for technology, therefore there has been a slower integration of XML into products, besides the one's that MS writes itself. XML will pick up steam but its gonna take a longer period of time, which to me is a speed bump in Microsoft's grand plans. Am I wrong??? |

Yes, you're wrong. All the major companies support it and are increasing their support for it - Sun, Oracle, BEA, IBM, etc. As for XML web services, they are beginning to emerge. I've recently seen offerings by both Google and Amazon. I'm sure more will follow.
There isn't a project that I work on that doesn't use XML somewhere or other. XML will be every bit as prolific as TCP/IP is for network transport. |

There aren't any consumer oriented web services around. So of course they can't live up to any hype. <grin>
The work that IBM and Microsoft are doing with the WS group, will make consumer web services a much more possible reality. Let's remember the public outcry against .NET My Services. I'd say the public doesn't yet want personalized web services yet. The privacy and security measures in XML related standards will be able to provide privacy and security for web services. |
