Promethean Designs, developer of Interplay's Powerboat Racing and the soon-to-be-released racer Renegade Racers (which took only eight months to be developed, from paper to Sony-approval), has unveiled an impressive new title code-named Picassio.

Promethean Designs just unveiled this title for the PC, Dreamcast, and PlayStation, and although it is still in the early development phase, it looks as though this is going to be one of the bigger hits of 2000. The current screenshots and the movie are taken from the PC version. Publishers take note, because this title is still available for publishing.

Zombie VR Studios started the tactical shooter craze with Spec Ops. Since then, a slew of competitors have run with the genre. So when development for Spec Ops II began, Zombie should have taken a hard look at the competition. While SO2 is significantly better than its predecessor, it doesn't hold a candle to Rogue Spear or Delta Force 2.

Time: 01:15P PST/04:15P EST News Source: GameProWorld Posted By: Corey Gouker

Sierra has finally gotten SWAT right. As a single-player game, SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle stands proudly alongside Thief as one of a very few unconventional 3D shooters--one that rewards caution, patience, teamwork…and respect for life.

This series of Special Weapons and Tactics police games has begged for first-person treatment since the its launch in the mid-'90s. (After all, Infogrames managed a brilliant 2D/3D SWAT-like game called Hostage back in 1989.) But Sierra initially chose the trendy over the immersive--full-motion video in the first game and real-time strategy in the second--with inconsistent results.

    No more.

Ah, the '80s. Who could forget Miami Vice, Rubik's Cubes, Flock of Seagulls haircuts and Pac-Man?

Evidently, Activision hasn't dismissed this gnarly, pastel-colored decade as its latest offering is Interstate '82 (I-82)--the sequel to one of the most unique and enjoyable car combat games in recent memory, Interstate '76 (I-76).

Unfortunately, while I '82 offers a few new tweaks to the gameplay, it fails to recapture the magic of its 1997 predecessor.

Time: 15:34 EDT/20:34 GMT News Source: Window Planet Posted By: Matthew Sabean

Ross at Windows Planet has posted his review on the new game: Half Life: Opposing Forces.

With Half Life: Opposing Force there is only one word to describe, the graphics, the sound, and the overall experience: WOW! It is very hard to believe that HL is based on the Quake 2 engine with its slick bright and stunning graphics which are a stark contrast to its dark, dull id Software cousin.

You start the game dazed as you awake at a first aid station following a helicopter crash which has claimed the lives of almost all your team. All you hear is the noise of a scientist trying to resuscitate on of your long gone grunt brethren :)...only the beginning of the game and already your sucked into HL Op for's story. One of the best things about half life was the fact that you could interact with almost every character you meet , be it with one of your big feck off guns or otherwise :)

"Moore's Law is for wimps," proclaims Sanford Russell, product marketing manager for graphics chip company nVidia. Moore's Law refers to Gordon Moore, who suggested that semiconductor performance would double every 18 months. Moore was referring to CPUs, but for the past three years, the computational power of graphics chips has increased eightfold every 18 months. This pace clearly can't be sustained, but it signals a shift in the fault lines of the graphics business.

The Codie awards are presented annually by the Software Information Industry Association (SIIA) at a ceremony held in March. Today, the year 2000 nominees were announced. • CNET Gamecenter.com - Sneak Peeks - Harpoon 4
Time: 03:00 EST/08:00 GMT News Source: CNET Gamecenter.com Posted By: Corey Gouker

Modern naval warfare never looked as good as it does in Harpoon 4, the long-awaited successor to the once-famed war game franchise Harpoon. Harpoon 4's beautiful 3D graphics and user-friendly interface should make it accessible to newcomers, without sacrificing the depth and detail that made the original Harpoon a training tool at the U.S. Naval Academy.

For naval war-gaming grognards the name Harpoon conjures up images of tense battles between Russian Kara-class cruisers and American carrier battle groups, and of skirmishes between Egyptian Jianghu Frigates and Israeli Sa'ar 4 missiles boats. Former U.S. Naval Intelligence officer Larry Bond designed the original miniatures game nearly 20 years ago; since then, the Harpoon rule-set has witnessed countless battles between grim-faced commanders across the globe. Whether pitting players in confrontations with pewter miniatures across kitchen tables or in epic fights against the computer AI, Harpoon has become the definitive modern naval war game.

The numerous computer versions of Harpoon have been responsible for maintaining Harpoon's status as the ultimate naval war game. From the wildly popular initial port (the now-defunct Three-Sixty Pacific) to the latest PC translation, Harpoon Classic 97 (published by Interactive Magic), Harpoon computer games have been put through their paces on numerous hard drives. Recently, however, many fans have begun to fear that the franchise was dead. After all, the current computer game market is not exactly a friendly one for complex war games. But fear not, grognards, the franchise lives on, safely anchored in the calm waters of Strategic Simulations Incorporated (SSI).

    to continue to play Allegiance.
    Patch Link - http://fdl.msn.com/zone/allegiance/patch1813.exe

A number of players experienced a crash or lockup when they used the Auto-Update feature for Beta 0.1. For this patch, we are releasing it as a self-extracting file so even those who did experience the Auto-Update bug can get the update installed and continue to play.

The file is about 1.5MB in size. Once you download the file, double-click it to extract it and automatically have the files installed.

If you have not previously installed the Beta 0.1 Auto-Update files, you'll need to auto-update these as well, which will happen automatically once you connect to the Zone servers. The Beta 0.1 update is approximately 7MB in size.

New features in Beta 0.2 - Build 1813
    1. Balance/TechTree changes: Asteroids now regenerate He3 slowly, the amount
of money in the universe has been cut in half, the existing tower has been
significantly weakened, and a new tower has been added and there are three
versions of the booster now; the two new ones are in the supremacy path.
    2. A new map type, HiLo, has been created.
    3. Damage from collisions with "wimpy" objects has been reduced.
    4. Fixed numerous server crashing bugs.

  • Duke Nukem Forever Staff Discusses Quake 3 Keys
Time: 17:34 EST/22:34 GMT News Source: 3DNews.Net Posted By: Dennis Gregory

Following up on the big cdkey debate that's been raging around the net, Scott Miller over at 3DRealms working on Duke4 throws in his 2 cents on the discussion, with word that Duke4 will 'most likely' carry some cdkey protection as well. Get used to it kids, the net is getting bigger and cd burners cheaper every day, game developers are losing more sales due because of it.

...I've been watching the debates regarding QA3's server key validation because Duke Nukem Forever will likely use some form of copy protection too. Software theft (mostly casual theft, such a making a copy for a friend, family member, or co-worker) has become such a huge problem that developers and publishers can no longer release games without protection of some sort. Hit games used to sell many more copies than they do nowadays, and a good part of the dramatic drop must be due to the proliferation of CD-ROM burners.

  • More on Quake III CD Keys
Time: 19:25 EST/00:25 GMT News Source: Blue's News Posted By: Dennis Gregory

id Software's Graeme Devine updated his .plan with more tips for people having problems with the CD-Keys in the retail version of Quake III Arena:

Okay. First off, don't run crack executables on your client! All it's likely to do is grab your CD key and send it off somewhere. Authorization is server side, not client side. We will pursue and close down cracked servers with all available resources.
Secondly, CD keys are "leased", so if you log on through a dialup, play, then disconnect your modem and log right back on, your CD key will have to timeout on your previous IP before you can play again. This timeout period is currently set at 5 minutes.

Earlier today he made this update as well:

Okay. Hacker attempts with invalid keys are outnumbering real keys by a factor of 2:1 or so. Obviously this is somewhat validating the use of CD keys.

So far I've seen issues with the servers being able to see the auth server and clients using IP forwarding not having the correct setup on the IP forwarding server. If it's a Linux IP forwarding machine use something like:

    modprobe ip_masq_quake ports=26000,27000,27910,27960,27950,27951,27952

Modulating characters within a key sequence will not work. It appears to work because when you've validated your IP with an authentic CD key you've "leased" that IP address for a period of time. Even if you enter a junk string, that will work because your IP address is still valid.

The actual algorithm is a 64 bit DES key encryption method open to a very small window. The chances of coming up with a real valid key is in the range of billions and billions to one. A random pass through the available keys shows no sign of repeating sequences, it looks like good old chaos (in fact, statisical math proves this).

The client has no idea if your key is really valid or not, it just checks on the correct characters being entered.

It is localized into English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian all in the same build. You choose your language at the start of setup.

  • Quake III CD Key Problem
Time: 23:01 EST/04:01 GMT News Source: Blue's News Posted By: Dennis Gregory

id Software's Graeme Devine updated his .plan again about the problems that some people are having when entering their CD key for Quake III Arena. Here's the not-so-silent hint:

    IMPORTANT!!!!!

You MUST enter your CD key in lower case letters. If you do this through the menu it's automatic, but if you set it from the console, upper case letters will not work.

    IMPORTANT!!!!!

  • Quake III Demo Problem
Time: 22:50 EST/03:50 GMT News Source: Blue's News Posted By: Dennis Gregory

id's Graeme Devine updated his .plan with an explanation for Q3Demo users. Here's the scoop:

Why do I get booted back to the main menu?
It's because you've got a 1.11 client and you're trying to join a 1.09 (demo test) pure server. Since the protocol # is exactly the same, you see all the 1.09 servers in the browser, but when you try and join the game you get booted because you aren't "pure".
We'll switch off support for 1.09 listings in the browser once 1.11 demo is out for the Mac and Linux. Meanwhile there's not much I can do since I can't tell from the client side if you're a 1.09 or 1.11 client asking for list of available servers.

  • Quake III Arena: December 5th
Time: 18:07 EST/23:07 GMT News Source: GameSpot Posted By: Dennis Gregory

GameSpot which is a ZD website has posted an article on the upcoming Q3 release:
That's right. You'll only need to wait four more days to play the complete version of id Software's latest in Quake-frag action, Quake III Arena. In a joint announcement released today, Activision, the game's publisher, and id said that the game is expected to be on store shelves on Dec. 5, 1999, for about US$49.99.

Quake III Arena will feature 32 distinct bots that simulate real-world multiplayer action and will also help to hone gamers' skills for Internet battles.

''Quake III Arena goes beyond being a computer game and is a cultural phenomenon unto itself,'' said Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. ''With QUAKE III Arena, players can expect to experience all of the frenetic excitement, visceral gameplay, and mind-blowing visuals that have become the hallmark of id titles.''

For UK gamers, Quake III Arena will be available on Dec. 17 for about £44.99.

  • Quake III Final Demo?
Time: 18:02 EST/23:02 GMT News Source: E-Mail Posted By: Dennis Gregory

Here's some text from a .plan from a Quake III staff member:

In preparation for the full release.

The motd/master/auth servers run on ports 27950, 27951, 27952. The default game server
is on port 27960. If you’re firewalled against these ports you’ll need to get unfirewalled to
play the game. If we work on the servers from now on we’ll notify the community and schedule
the maintenance for the slowest period of the day (currently around 6am Dallas time).

We have what we consider a “gold” build of the demo. We’re putting it through the final push
of QA at Activision before releasing it since this build is going to be more or less prevalent
    throughout the known universe.

  • Quake III Release As early as Tomorrow?
Time: 17:56 EST/22:56 GMT News Source: Blue's News Posted By: Dennis Gregory

    From Blue's News:

Having just spoken with a contact at Activision, I can finally clear the air regarding the Quake III Arena release date. The reason there's a Sunday release date given (the 5th) is because that's the day they expect it to be available everywhere (in the U.S., at least). The game will be trickling out towards the end of the week, and will be on shelves for sure by Sunday. What's that mean? Some places are claiming they'll have it on the shelves as soon as tomorrow - which is a definite possibility. Also, remember: this is only the Windows version. Specific dates for the Linux and Mac versions have yet to be announced.

Here are some places to get it and what the release day is on their site:

    EBWorld - December 2nd
GameStop - December 8th (Will ship earlier most likely)

Following the release of Tomb Raider: Last Revelation, Eidos has shipped yet another third-person action game with a buxom female as the central figure: Urban Chaos. Developed by UK-based Mucky Foot, the game places you in the shoes of rookie cop D'Arci Stern who, in perfect Lara Croft fashion, uses her own set of climbing, swinging, and jumping moves to rid her city streets of crime.

The game features over 30 levels and incorporates several different modes of play, including driving missions, sleuthing, and attaining time-sensitive goals. Urban Chaos should be available around Dec. 18 for US$39.99.
