And your futurism is a bit misguided--DVD recording will establish itself over the next 2 to 3 years probably, but then there will be another format shakeout, with another quick but messy ramp-up to ubiquity for whatever format that is--then another couple of years. And at that point, the content providers are going to have to figure out new ways of packaging media (do you release single movies per DVD, or huge collections, etc) and there'll be confusion again.
I'm not suggesting this is dead on, but saying that "DVD recording is here, what's next?" is like saying that "broadband is firmly entrenched, now where is everyone's 100MB connection?"
