Microsoft Corp has been quietly working since last fall on a device combining its money-losing Xbox video game console and with its digital video recorder, technology magazine Red Herring reported on Tuesday. The publication also cited a source as saying internal Microsoft estimates showed that the software giant would lose $750 million on the Xbox game console this fiscal year and $1.1 billion in the next fiscal year, ending June 2003. That compares with an estimate given to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in 1999 that the Xbox project could lose $900 million over eight years, author Dean Takahashi said. | ||

| personal shopper, this is still HIGHLY speculative and no ones the timing or what the device will be, but... on most of your questions you are very, very confused. UltimateTV is not a DVD recorder--it's a DVR or PVR--a digital or personal video recorder that does not record to DVD but to hard drive. RCDVD is not a format for recordable DVD media so I have no idea what you are talking about. MS does little to control the pricing or development of DVD drives or media so they will not directly affect the price of media; Apple on the other hand does package it's own media and have reduced the cost to $2 or less when buying in volume packs (on the PC end, it is difficult to get media for less than $5 unless you are talking HUGE volumes). To record, DV in a format playable on most devices (and certainly compatibility would be a concern (DVD-RW v. DVD+RW) but as I said this won't be a DVD recorder) the video will need to be in mpeg-2 format--this will not substantially increase the recordable time on a DVD versus VHS. The amount of recordable video time will not increase until a new format is chosen for DVDs--which seems like it will be mpeg-4 but at the same time the MPA and RIA will oppose being able to record 6 2+ hours movies on a single disc so this will probably still be restricted. Hope that clears you up a little bit. |

P.S. I doubt you'll be able to trade in an Xbox, but good try. LOL.
And your futurism is a bit misguided--DVD recording will establish itself over the next 2 to 3 years probably, but then there will be another format shakeout, with another quick but messy ramp-up to ubiquity for whatever format that is--then another couple of years. And at that point, the content providers are going to have to figure out new ways of packaging media (do you release single movies per DVD, or huge collections, etc) and there'll be confusion again. I'm not suggesting this is dead on, but saying that "DVD recording is here, what's next?" is like saying that "broadband is firmly entrenched, now where is everyone's 100MB connection?" |
