I have a cautionary tale for the leaders of the video game industry. It's intended as a warning against overestimating the competitors you know and underestimating the competitor you don't--specifically, Microsoft. The tale I have in mind is the story of WordPerfect and Lotus. Those two software makers went from major desktop contenders to major has-beens--largely because they concentrated their firepower on each other, instead of practicing what Novell's Ray Noorda called "coopetition" and battling their mutual enemy. | ||

| Doesn't seem like "coopetition" did much to help Novell. Today, the only "coopetition" they seem to be providing is in the courtrooms, joining forces with AOL, Sun, and other sad, backwards companies to pay off state AGs, spread FUD, and "compete" (or is it coopete?) through litigation and attempted technology theft. |

Whatever happened to building truly innovative, quality software as competition? It works, it really does! Many companies have beat MS by this (Intuit comes first to mind) and do quite well.
Unfortunately, Word Perfect, nor Lotus, nor Novell really made innovative, nor quality software. They were the only thing in town until MS swooped in and offered a much better product. Of course, they'll never admit it because it's easier just to blame MS rather than realize that they failed to produce a competitive product. Now they're advocating collusion. How sad. Really, really sad. |

| #8....not sure which Stores you are going to, but all the Electronic stores in my area are sold out of the XBox Consoles, and you need to be on a waiting list to buy them. My 2 local Best Buys, 2 Local Circuit Citys, Walmarts, Electronics Boutique were all sold out this past weekend of the XBox console inventory. |

| 13, good points but I think you are forgetting that this is a very volatile market. Sega used to be the top dog and look at them now. I am not saying that MS will necessarily rise to the top, but I do think MS has the money and patience to stay with it for a while. People will realize that the Xbox doesn't have the same problems as other software (BSOD, etc.) after it has been better established in the market place and word-of-mouth has spread. Xbox may not have great sales, but I can sure tell you I hear about it more than any other console and I don't hang out with MS employees or worshipers. |

Anyone else noticed ZDNet's schizophrenia (sp?) here?
In one article, they talk about how dismal a failure the XBox is and how evil MS is for trying to assert themselves into another market. And now, this article. The whole article is based on the premise that it's just a matter of time before Sony has to bow out of the market because of MS dominating. So which is it? |
