Nvidia: Forget Microsoft--chip's ahoy | |

Playing down accounting issues and an ongoing pricing dispute with Microsoft, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said an upcoming graphics chip should help propel the company to continued growth this year. Speaking on Wednesday at a chip conference here, Huang characterized the relationship with Microsoft as "very strong," adding, "We just asked a third party to help us solve some stuff." Nvidia disclosed Monday that it was in arbitration with Microsoft over the pricing of its chips used in the Xbox, a move Nvidia said could either lead it to recognize additional revenue or force it to sell some chips at a loss--depending on how the issue is resolved. Microsoft's Xbox accounts for 15 percent to 20 percent of Nvidia's sales. Nvidia also said Monday it was restating its earnings for the past three years because of accounting issues. | ||

| Why not just wait for the NV30? It's scheduled for August, should run Doom III better, and will support DX 9 and more Windows desktop acceleration features. |

| My only concern is that while NV30 will be rolling out rumours about NV40 or whatever it will be called will appear. Kidding of course, NV30 is what I am waiting for too. |

I have a GeForce Ti500, which is fine for now.
I'm not doing _anything_ until I see exactly what the new Matrox card is capable of. If it's 3D capabilities are as good as they sound on paper, I'll jump ship in a heartbeat. Mainly because Matrox has got 2D display quality nailed, while nVidia has lousy 2D clarity compared to Matrox. But, Matrox has taken us down this road before, and have proven time and again that they are a 2D company. Hopefully, this time it's different :) TL |

TechLarry: The Matrox card is still only DX 8 compliant. It has some DX 9 features but will not be a full DX 9 card unless Matrox makes some changes before its release.
Tom's Hardware and Anandtech have preliminary articles on the Parhelia. JaggedFlame: NV30 is the next major revision. It should be like the jump from the TNT line to the GeForce line. It uses a different architecture from the GeForce line, and will support DX 9. 3D Labs and ATI will also have new cards out soon. If you're getting the new computer next summer, NVIDIA will probably have 2 revisions later than the NV30 by then, possibly with another change in architecture. I know about cheap :-) I still have a GeForce 1 DDR (before that, a TNT, and before that, a Monster 3D -- 2 year average upgrade cycle, though I think the GF 1 is going on 3 years).
