| When the page first loads, you are asked to accept an ActiveX control. Click Yes to accept the control. Then, when the page loads, click demo. A download dialog should show. Click Open to run the application. A calculator should pop up. It is basically a web version of the Windows calculator that communicates with MS' servers to perform calculations. |

You can say no to the ACtiveX control... If you just want to run the demo.

| What's the point at all? It depends on ActiveX--actually it doesn't but being asked to install a control that's unnecessary is bad enough. And using .Net on the server for a calculator? I've had a client-side javascript calculator on my homepage for three years now. What's the web service part of it at all? It's not as if I need an XML web service to find out from some other data source that 2 comes after 1. Simply bizarre and pointless. |

| Sodajerk, it's just a demo of a working web service that is kept simple for developers to go over the code. It isn't there as a consumer service. Must you find something wrong with everything MS? |

I get what it is enforcer. My point is: if their demos use antiquated technology that has been dispised for three years now and it doesn't actually need web services and it doesn't offer anything new--wouldn't you call that a bad demo example? Are they already running out of ideas for web services or something?

Apparently sodajerk is too stupid to have read post #4 which indicated you don't need the ActiveX control to run the demo. The ActiveX control is used for downloading the sample source code. Not quite clear why, don't really care.
BTW, ActiveX controls have been a lifesaver for our company allowing us to deliver rich client applications via our intranet servers. But that's ok, you just keep thinking they are despised since you hate MS with a passion. |
