Microsoft designed its Metro, aka Modern, interface for "your computer-illiterate little sister, for grandpas who don't know how to use that computer 'dofangle' thingy, and for mom who just wants to look up apple pie recipes." At least that's the take from someone who claims to have worked on the design of Windows 8. | ||

For me the idea of eliminating a device was the right approach. The iPad is great but it didn't replace anything and in fact just added another device to my computer bag. Unlike the smart phone which eliminated the need for a separate music player, today's tablets just add weight to our bags. One device to do everything without compromise is the goal. MS is not there yet but it is getting closer.
Personally, I enjoy the Modern/Metro interface. In fact, I think Metro it's the best tablet interface out there. When I switch between my Dell Venue 8 Pro and my iPad 4 the superiority of the Metro UI is evident. I'm not saying the apps are superior, just that navigating Metro is a lot easier and the gestures seem more intuitive. It has it's quirks, some of which were addressed in 8.1 and others will be address in the next release, but it keeps getting better. |
