I installed it yesterday and believe the configuration options will make 8.1 acceptable to our customers that fear change. Setting App view for the Start screen make clicking the "start" button seem more familiar, but expansive and over time will likely be viewed as superior to the old start menus. Boots to the desktop fine also. So, when 8.1 is gold customers will have more options than with Windows 8, and can therefore set the system operation more to their liking.
Too bad Ballmer didn't have the insight to listen to customer's comments on the Windows 8 previews. He's too damn arrogant. But, he did finally listen and captain his ship accordingly.
