I have an iPad and an Android Phone. I know the Android OS has that "Geeky" feel to it that gets PC folks all hot and bothered, but it still can't stand up to iOS in outright useability without effort. And that there is Apple's secret. Always has been, in fact.
Android doesn't really impress me all that much to be honest, and all those 'Freedom's' are going to slowly be chipped away as it's developed. Kinda already started. Why don't I have an iPhone then? A reasonable question :) Cost. Not the cost of the phone, but the greed of the supporting Telco's. I will NOT buy into AT&T's or Verizon's high cost of using the device. I found an nice little plan on Virgin that costs me $25 a month. 300 minutes prime time, unlimited texting and unlimited web. Perfect for me. I rarely use it as a phone (have a company phone for that) but it's a perfect plan for someone that doesn't really need one, yet wants one for emergencies (voice and data). No contract and it's monthly. I can start/stop as I please. The LG Optimus phone cost me $199, and it has a micro-SD card slot to boot :) This post was edited by TechLarry on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 10:57. |

| Hear, hear! Gartner has prognosticated with their shiny new crystal ball. Better get your investment portfolio in line since it is so easy to see 4 years into the future without any knowledge, other than guesses entered into a database that treats the data-guesses as facts. |

Win 8 based tablets certainly won't catch ipads in that time span. However, Android tablets aren't exactly flying off the shelves. I have a friend who is an Apple junkie and he is very excited about Win 8. He installed the pre beta on an old HP touch screen and his reaction was "Awesome". The more complete experience of Win 8 will place it in a solid second postion by 2015 - imo.

Maybe on tablets, but that sesame street interface has no business on a Laptop/Desktop computer. First thing I did was hack the registry to get rid of it. I think it's just plain awful. |

For now, I agree, but as touch encroaches into the workplace so will the way we interface with these devices.
Similarly, MS is trying to position XBOX with bing and voice command content search. While this is cool, the current state of xbox voice commands still take a backseat to my remote. And it will take a while to break out of old habits. |

For a good idea of the state of MS voice control, take a look at Ford's Sync.
As long as you stay within Microsoft's narrow rule set, it works fine. Do anything creative, say, talk like a human, and you never know what the hell you are going to get. A good example is if I want to play..... say..... Pearl Jam's "Black" from the Ten Album. The track is named "Black - Album Version". I can't just say "Black". I have to actually say "Black - Album Version" or it will find everything BUT what I'm after. I guess what I'm saying is when it comes to fuzzy searches, it ain't had enough Martini's :) |
