For months, rumors have been circulating that Microsoft was poised to make its “Windows Everywhere” world a reality. But that reality is still a ways off, in spite of comments by Microsoft execs this week at the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference about a unified ecosystem across phones, PCs and TVs. | ||

| One reason given is "because the price drops dramatically". Hmmm. Windows 3.1 cost, in the ancient days, under $49. Windows 7 Home Premium is between $89 and $199 depending on if you buy OEM or retail. 7 Professional is $40 to $100 more expensive than Home Premium. The "cost" of having multiple offerings was a result of Microsoft's past actions. Any savings is unlikely to be passed onto the consumer unless MS decides to be extremely competitive in the smart phone arena and charges $5, or so, per installation. Traditional usage will stay high priced as there is no way the cash cow will be put on a diet. |
