Microsoft Reduces Xbox Price to $199.99 (U.S.)/$299.99 (CAN) | |

Through a carefully planned effort that includes the participation of key retailers and third-party publishers, Microsoft Corp. today unveiled its plans for a North American price reduction of the Xbox (TM) video game system. Effective immediately, Xbox will have an estimated retail price of $199.99 in the United States ($299.99 CAN). The price reduction will be supported by a multimillion dollar national merchandising and marketing campaign set to begin this weekend. Microsoft also announced it is reducing the price of Xbox in Japan to 24,800 yen effective Wednesday, May 22.* Xbox was originally priced at $299.99 in the United States, $459.99 in Canada and 34,800 yen in Japan. | ||

| #7 The 4.1 figure is the attach rate (average number of games sold immediately with the console's purchase). People will still buy more games later in the life of the console. The high attach rate along with the games sold during the life of the console should make up for the price drop. Arguably, the upcomming online service should also spur more game purchases. |

I honestly don't think anybody knows how much money MS loses on the XBox... I find it curious that people keep making claims regarding this.

| #18, you must remember who is the CEO of MS and how the board there operates. The company makes enough money to lose a lot on the XBOX, yes it will not profit until the second one comes out most likely but MS has the money to screw around with. Lot's of companies have units that lose money. MS is trying to see how they will do in the gaming console market, and as stated before no one knows how much MS is actually losing. One thing to ponder though is that the major suppliers of parts are NVidia and Intel, also losing money to get out there, MS may have some deal to do some tweaking or helping out in the PC market for there products as well. Just speculation, I am sure they are not. But it was stated when the XBox came out that Intel and Nvidia were selling the components at a loss as well. |
