Windows 8: 3D, But Only on 64-bits? | |

Microsoft isn't talking, but an Italian tech enthusiasts site claims to have the skinny on more rumored new or upgraded features coming in Windows 8. On the list is a 3D user interface, codenamed Wind and designed for higher-end systems initially, that will automatically adapt to the user's actions. The latest revelations came when the site, titled windows8Italia, posted information that it described as "leaks" regarding Microsoft's (NASDAQ) next version of Windows Wednesday. Although the site is in Italian, Bing translation renders the post in readable, though imperfect, English. "This article reports news unofficial and not confirmable assertions, as the result of word of mouth. Are therefore worth rumors circulate since so how might be fake, might also be true," a translated disclaimer with the post said. | ||

I actually hope it's true. Kicking x32 totally and completely to the curb can't happen soon enough for me.
This helps get vendors off their asses and producing x64 drivers and software. I can't wait for Microsoft to discontinue WOW services alltogether. Simply shipping Windows 7 with X64 an easy option, as well as OEM's selling new machines mostly as X64 machines has really helped get x64 rolling, and an official "end-of-support for x32" call by Microsoft will be the final push to get it done and over with. |

BTW... I'm not saying I think putting the windows interface in 3D mode on the card is a good idea. In fact, I think it's a terrible idea.
The power consumption difference between a card running in 2D mode and 3D mode is staggering. It's a waste of energy in a major way. |

I always thought cards did nothing (sit at idle) until something actually happens. Unless Explorer has windows coming at you like an X Wing fighter and you have to shoot them with your laser cannon every .5 seconds, I doubt power consumption will go up much. It might be fun though ... |

All it takes is for something to move on the screen to crank those things up.
I once had an issue where whenever I drove the car into a corner in iRacing, the video card would set off an alarm. At least I thought it was the video card. After days of troubleshooting, I figured out it was not the Video Card. It was a UPS alarm. When I went into corners, the graphics card pulled so much power that it overloaded the UPS, and the UPS alarm sound was traveling from under the desk, up the back wall, right up to where the computer was making it sound like it was the video card :) |
