After years of pushing Silverlight, there is a school of thought rapidly emerging that makes it seem Microsoft is switching its allegiance in the direction of HTML5.
For sure, HTML5 was talked about a lot - Silverlight, Microsoft's rival to Adobe's Flash wasn't. Is this by design or accident? In recent weeks, Apple was rumoured to be considering buying Adobe. By downplaying Silverlight and talking about HTLM5, perhaps this acquisition is still on the cards?

I have not read this anywhere, "Apple was rumoured to be considering buying Adobe.". I read that Microsoft had discussed "possibly" buying Adobe.
Microsoft is out to push IE9 right now. Not Silverlight. This was all about the browser wars.

When someone like Bob Muglia states:
"HTML is the only true cross-platform solution for everything, including [Apple's] iOS platform""
and:
"Silverlight is our development platform for Windows Phone."
means that a strategy change has happened.
Remember that at the beginning MS was promoting Silverlght as a replacement for Adobe Flash.

Oh, please. He never said that SL is for phone ONLY.
Muglia has just posted some clarification:
http://team.silverlight.net/announcement/pdc-and-silverlight/
...
I understand that what I said surprised people and caused controversy and confusion. As this certainly wasn’t my intent, I want to apologize for that. I’d like to use this post to expand on what I said, and talk about the very important role Silverlight has going forward.
In the interview, I said several things that I want to emphasize:
1. Silverlight is very important and strategic to Microsoft.
2. We’re working hard on the next release of Silverlight, and it will continue to be cross-browser and cross-platform, and run on Windows and Mac.
3. Silverlight is a core application development platform for Windows, and it’s the development platform for Windows Phone.
...
I said, “Our Silverlight strategy and focus going forward has shifted.” This isn’t a negative statement, but rather, it’s a comment on how the industry has changed and how we’re adapting our Silverlight strategy to take advantage of that.

#3: Not many companies change their strategy when things are going great and the cash is rolling in. It's usually something you do when Plan A isn't working. MS may claim that SL is important, but like I said in my other SL-related post, content is king. Is there any SL content out there not made by MS to push the uptake of SL?? Flash is so ubiquitous that it's going to take something a LOT more organic than MS can manage to change the status quo.

As I said, you're simply looking at public web sites only. That is your problem.

#5: Anyone needing web apps is not going to throw out what they have now that works just because MS wants everyone to use SL, and they're not going to throw out their tools & know-how based on years of working with Flash etc just to make MS happy. And Adobe isn't sitting still and waiting for MS to eat their lunch. As much as I detest Adobe, they own content development on the web and there will be an evolutionary shift in Flash technology as opposed to it being replaced outright by a newcomer.

#6 "Anyone needing web apps is not going to throw out what they have now that works just because MS wants everyone to use SL,"
Why do you say "now"? It's not like SL was released recently. Nothing has changed really. SL was not replacing standard web technologies (HTML/CSS/JS) yesterday and is not doing that now. Quite the opposite, they (MS) have confirmed their support for HTML5 by saying they are focusing there too now: IE9 is coming and I guess we'll get better support in Visual Studio and maybe some other tools like Blend.
"and they're not going to throw out their tools & know-how based on years of working with Flash etc just to make MS happy."
Flash is rarely discussed here where I work, only when we need to have video player on some public web site. I don't even know ActionScript, nor will I spend time to learn it now.
On the other hand, ma and many other developers already know .NET and Visual Studio. And XAML, since many of us have used WPF. We're already ready to code for Silverlight.

I did, still I don't see how this changes anything: they just want to reach bigger audience and if you want to do that - HTML5 is way to go. I would question wisdom to put SL there in first place.
