| Seems like Silverlight is headed for the digital crypt from what I've read recently. Even MS see's HTML5 as the winner of this race. |

#1 MS is, I think, basically saying that if you need to make cross platform app, html5 is your best bet. Nothing new there.
That leaves plenty of space for Silverlight. Nobody is saying Obj. C is dead on iOS devices because you can run HTML5 app there, right? Or that Java is dead (on Android), because of HTML5? |

| SL is dead. That being said, I don't remember if I've ever been to a web site that ran SL content. That one year of MLB and the Olympic games were exclusives that MS wrote a big cheque for. When MS stopped writing cheques, everyone went back to Flash. MS had a huge uphill battle trying to do a 'me too!' on a product with 10 years of momentum and mind share. |

#3 No, it is not dead. Is Java dead on Android? Is Obj. C dead on iPhone or iPad?
How can it be dead, they just launched WP7? Dead? Only if WP7 fails and other MS based devices where I expect to see it running fail too (tablets, Xbox, maybe even TVs). Also, for desktop apps, I expect WPF and SL to really become one where SL will take over in fact. That alone is huge market. It's just that SL will not be competing directly with HTML5 and MS is making it clear. But was it really competing with it? I don't think so. 5 years from now - I don't know, but then who does? Can anyone really be sure that Google's Java on Android will still be preferred way to create apps on Android..? |

| #3: If it isn't dead then it's pining for the fjords. But seriously, I don't believe it is dead as in 'never to return', but more of a niche thing that might interest the Win Phone & Tablet crowd. MS can keep improving it but if they can't generate content than it's just going to be another platform that failed. They already had their Flash-killer kick at the can and didn't get any traction. |

I think you're over-estimating the impact SL would have. MS would have to come out with a suite of very compelling SL-based business apps for anyone to give a rat's ass. And, if these business apps are so compelling, they would have likely already been implemented using older technology. Why would any business go to the time & trouble to re-implement in SL? Following your logic, WPF is dead too. Yeah, right. It isn't logic as much as it is opinion. WPF may as well be dead for all I know as a user. Am I using any apps that take advantage of it? I don't know for sure but I suspect not. I didn't even know it was still around, to be honest. |
