Microsoft's introduction of Windows Phone 7, set to be formally introduced next week, will barely move the needle on the company's dismal share of the smartphone OS market, according to new data released Wednesday by industry analysts at Gartner.

Why are Gartner's predictions still relevant?
They also predicted that Vista would be the last version of Windows.
Give me a break.

The good news for Windows Phone 7 is that Gartner is just about always wrong :)

#3: Agreed. Reading tea leaves may be just as accurate as Gartner usually is.

Make no mistake. MS is very scared of Android. Google has taken a page out of the MS playbook and run with it. MS has a lot of catching up to do.
Phone7 may well end up being like Kin. Still if Android is the future, I have no doubt MS will port a version of Office that integrates with the OS and look to make liscensing fees by trying to enforce real or imagined patent rights.
Don't look for the Phone7 OS to make money for MS. At present MS just needs to be in the game. As Xbox has proven it can outlast many competetors including ones as strong as Sony.
By the way I still think the killer app for smartphones would be a home server exchange app (4 users max) that allowed real time syncing of a cell phone WITHOUT using the cloud. No personal data on a Goog server would be heaven sent!

#5,
- Why wouldn't MS be afraid of Android? it's only the best selling OS in the mobile space. (where is there the rolling eye emoticon when you need it)
- how does the Android make money for the Google? At this point in time market share is more important that turning a profit. At some point in time there is a correlation between the two.
- I truly doubt that you will see any office port for Android until 2012. MS will try to give WP7 as much of a competitive advantage as it can muster.
*as for your idea, isn't that called a "personal cloud" or "local cloud"?

With Microsoft never big in the mobile market, what kind of prediction is this? It's obvious. It can't compete agains RIM, Androids or iPhone.
Microsoft has had WMF before but they kept on fumbling the ball at first and goal. Out came the iPhone [how many years ago?] and Microsoft still can't figure out what it wants to do - let alone changing names.
@Dark Lord: Last I checked, iPhone is still outselling the Android. And I'm sure Google is making money on it. Google doesn't give anything away for free without something up their sleeve.

Oh how the times have changed. Back in the day when MS needed someone to polish the turd, Gartner was one of the few go-to guys who could always be counted on to provide whatever fluffing MS may have needed at the time. Not like today.
