Microsoft's Surface tablet: Three years too late? | |

Microsoft user interface researcher Bill Buxton told the Globe and Mail that he expects Microsoft to be offering three years from now a tablet device that will be like a slimmed-down mini Surface. That sounds all well and good… except for the three years part. And the Windows part (unless Buxton is expecting Microsoft to make some pretty radical changes to the version of Windows running on these things. Microsoft execs have been thinking about ways to make the Surface multi-touch tabletop more affordable and portable for at least two years. (Remember “Oahu,” anyone?) So far, however, the Surface remains a “big ass table,” as it was dubbed in a spoof video a while back. | ||

Surface served it's purpose, that purpose being a PR campaign. At the time Apple was hammering Vista with their I am a Mac Ads. Everyone and their grand mother wanted an Iphone. Chrome was in the wild. MSFT had nothing going on..zip, zero, zilch and needed some good press, so they started showing Surface.
Long term, surface is a proof of concepts where parts will be adopted into other MS products. To get an actually surface product from MS in the not distant future? not happening! 5-7 years from now a giant touch screen "TV" running some iteration of IOS or Android will appear. This TV will able to Pivot into a table for under $1000 |
