Microsoft Raises Price For Xbox Live Gold Membership | |

Microsoft announced on Monday morning that it was increasing the price of an Xbox Live Gold membership by $10, from $49.99 to $59.99 a year, including for existing members in the U.S. starting November 1st. Members in the U.K., Canada and Mexico will also see price increases. The new price, the first time the company has ever raised its rates, represents a 20% increase, which will likely have a significant impact on the revenues of the moneymaking service. | ||

I've been thinking about a PS3. Maybe it's finally time... It would be nice not being locked into over-priced, licensed peripherals for a change too.
And Microsoft's bogart on Wireless devices is just bullshit. |

Been using an xbox as a media extender and for Netfilix. The Netflix interface is superior to the Wii but you need a live membership. $50 - $60 is simply too much to pay. The PS3 has wireless N built in (although the newer xbox has that as well), doubles as a Blue Ray player, and Sony's "Live" equivalent is free. |

$10. WHAT! Sweet Jesus I'm changing gaming consoles now. I mean, freakin ten dollars a year? It's like they think I'm made of money. I'm totally picking up a PS3 now. I mean, it's open, they don't license devices. I've always felt I am not able to use any other console since I use an XBox. It will feel so liberating to brick my XBox and buy a PS3 and use their superior online services... and hell I'll be saving all that money avoiding that $10 a year.
Freakin M$. All forcing us to spend our money on their crappy services. /facepalm |

| Latch: The story is worthy because it is a wonderful example of corporate greed. A 20% increase for a service (even if its only $10 per year) is substantial. I suppose that $130 for a 250-GB Xbox 360 hard drive is a good deal also. Damn it. We're in the worst economy in 80 years. Common sense needs to be infused into corporate cultures. |

The percentage is misleading. 20% does sound like a lot until you realize it's a dollar a month. I suspect that the only people who really care are those who will no doubt be asking for a raise of their allowance. Plus, I have to shake my head a bit. MS has done a LOT of nasty, selfish things over the years without much of a peep from the people. But when you raise XBox Live by $10, there's an outcry? Give me a break. Common sense needs to be infused into corporate cultures. Capitalism dictates that in any collision between money and $THING, $THING will lose. Every time. |

Actually guys, the increase is provided a reason and all the new content from ESPN and other is behind it.
Also, for all existing customers, they can choose to renew now - for $1.00 processing to get a renewal rate of $39.99 - more than 20% LESS than the normal prince. The numbers work if you take the time to learn about them < 5 bucks / mo. There is no way they are going to package this message in any way that will not hammer them. |

A processing fee to purchase a renewal? What the hell is that all about?
And I could care less about ESPN. I didn't ask for it. I just want to play games. I didn't realize my 360 was going to turn into another Cable Box with rising rates. I already have one of those. My sub expires in November. And since I gave away most of my games, and the one game I do have that I wanted to play has turned out to be a grand pile of Bovine Excrement (Tiger Woods 2011 - easily the worst version ever released), then I think it may be time for a change. This is really just the last straw. The whole "we will control what you can use" mentality about the 360 has always bugged me, and Microsoft's greedy iron-grasp of all things wireless on the 360 is yet more Bovine Excrement. It's a good time to try something new. I don't really have a lot to lose anyway. At least the PS3 has open peripherals you can purchase. I could turn out hating it, but at the least I'll end up with a decent Blu-Ray player that seems to have far fewer issues than stand-alone units. |

#6 lol @ Corporate Greed. They are offering more services/content... crazy to expect to receive a small amount of extra money in return. The only complaint I may have is they need a "gaming" middle tier that doesn't include all the extra content for those who just want to game.
#8 Too right. ESPN is expensive too. They really put the spurs to sports lovers wallets in cable too. #9 I'm with you, I'm for a middle tier w/o ESPN. But I'm not about to crap my pants about it. I don't have either, but my friends with PS3's aren't nearly as excited about their consoles as my friends with XBoxes. And most people I know with a PS3 have an xBox. I'll be buying an xBox finally with Kinect... I don't really care if MS has licensing requirements for peripherals... their online experience is hands down the best from my convo's... and Sony, if anybody, is the d-bag gorilla company in the room when it comes to gaming. |

| Let's stop acting like there's all this content included with a Gold membership. I don't know about ESPN but from what I've seen, the XBOX Live experience is simply a gateway to a shoping mall. |

How's about we stop acting like the XBox Live Gold subscription costs alot of money. For $5/m you have access to this "mall." Ad free access to Last.FM. An enhanced online experience with your friends (arcade etc.) An enhanced Netflix Experience (which will only get better as content owners loosen up to the idea of streaming experience). Some Apps, Some early content & discounts and the ESPN experience. The Avg person could choose a sandwich over a drive through dinner at a fast food joint twice in 1 month and save the money needed to pay their Live bill. At about $0.16/d I'd say it's not too hard to find the value to offset the cost for most. if it doesn't, enjoy the free silver membership. Again, I'd prefer a middle tier that gives you the Gaming upgrades and leaves out the extras... but again saving $15-20/year isn't much to get all up in a tizzy about. |

And more and more, we are being forced to pay for crap a lot of us don't want. I simply want to play online.
Someone else had it right. There needs to be a middle, cheaper subscription for those of us that don't want all the extra or marketing stuff. Live is becoming one big friggin' advertisement. Microsoft should be paying ME to use it. |

Taken by itself 5 bucks a month is not a big deal but taken in the grand scheme it starts to add up.
Think about your costs 20 years ago (where age appropriate) - 1. Our Cable TV Bills have skyrocketed - Cable TV provides many more channels - many of which repeat what's running a few clicks down the remote - about $100 a month sans premium content. Plus I get to rent their digital decription boxes just so I can watch a product I already bought. Imagine buying a sixpack of your favorite beer and having to rent a special opener. 2. Has anybody taken a look at their cell phone bills lately. You can't even buy a decent phone without it requiring a data plan. For my family it's about $110 a month without a data plan. Minimal $10 extra per phone with a data plan. 3. High speed Internet - another $45 a month 4. DVR - $13 a month 5. Higher Electric bills to power all of this crap 6. The Banks reduce teller staff through ATMs but somehow pass more fees onto us. 7. The credit card Industry has been screwing the public for years with outrageous fees and penalties. 8. Baggage fees at airports (what's next - a BO fee in a cab ride? Cabbie: “You are breathing my BO - that will be $1.00 extra per mile”) 9. XBOX subscription $5 a month I could probably go on but you get my point. I'm just tired of getting bent over with all of these nitpicky fees couched under the terms "Service" or "Platinum" (nobody asked me if I wanted Last.FM - why should I have to pay for it?)
