Microsoft convicted of software piracy | |

Microsoft was found guilty of software piracy last year by a French court, according to facts unearthed today by the geek community. But the Redmond giant's conviction and three million franc (£285,000) fine somehow managed to escape the headlines. In fact, until today the only place the story has appeared is in French newspaper Le Monde Informatique. And the only person who noticed the irony of the world's most aggressive anti-piracy firm being fined for piracy was Peruvian congressman Edgar David Villanueva Nunez. Nunez inadvertently became a hero of the open source movement last month when he penned a letter to Juan Alberto Gonzalez, general manager of Microsoft Peru, arguing that the free software model does not break any intellectual property laws. | ||

The headline is incorrect... A company that Microsoft acquired was convicted of software piracy for violating a licensing agreement.
This article is really not news so much as opinion. Something "journalists" in the tech media can't figure out the difference. |

| #7, None the less, it's not Microsoft who did this, it's the company that Microsoft aquired. They are spinning the article to make it look like the big bad evil Microsoft is attacking software piracy, but that they are pirating software themselves. There is a big difference. |

Well by your logic #7 Microsoft shouldn't be held responsible here as Microsoft no longer owns SoftImage. They sold it to Avid ages ago. It was a beautiful move by Microsoft they ported softImage over to Windows NT which in effect legitamized NT as a high end computing platform for 3D. This isn't news. THis is just typical Microsoft Hating at its worst. There are a ton of things to really grill Microsoft about. This isn't one of them.

I never said that Microsoft wasn't responsible for paying the penalities because of their ownership. But Microsoft was not to blame for pirating the code.
As #9 said, this is being sold as something other than it is. |

Weather you realise it or not, you are WRONG. Yes, Microsoft owned softimage, but it was NOT Microsoft who did this, as the article leads you to believe. |

I'm afraid not. The code was pirated before Microsoft purchased the company. "It was not until 1995 that the contact between Syn'X and MS/Softimage terminated, and things started to go south. " No, it went south in early 1994 when SoftImage wanted to renegotiate terms, this was prior to the MS sale. Syn'X said no, and then when they found out about the MS acquisition they told them they weren't interested in working with them at all. But the point was this news item is simply an anti-MS slur which you have done nothing to dispute. |
