In a speech to fellow CEOs at Microsoft’s 14th annual CEO Summit, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer said something that gives us an insight into what went wrong with Vista. Taking about the operating system, he said: “We tried too big a task and in the process wound up losing thousands of man hours of innovation.” The problem with Microsoft (specifically in the pre Windows 7 days) is that the company had a huge track record of vaporware announcements. During the development of Longhorn (the project that led to Vista), there was an almost daily flow of announcements and new features from Microsoft. Longhorn was going to be everything to everybody. | ||

| Someone needs to get him a dictionary. He keeps misusing the word 'innovation' in place of the word 'work' or 'productivity'. |

#1: Ballmer likes to consider work an innovation.
There are 2080 man hours per work year. Ballmer inadvertently downplayed the amount of "lost" time when Vista was rewritten after Longhorn turned out to be inept. The number of man hours spent inefficiently was closer to one million (150 people for three years) during the Longhorn/Vista development cycle. |

I think the "innovation" thing is a hold over from the Gates era. I believe that I heard an NPR minute where Gates extolled the virtues of "innovation".
In my day, said the geezer, it was individual potential, hard work and luck. I believe that Malcom Gladwell has taken this banner up and run with it already. In the case of Vista they just ran out of luck.... see Steve Jobs circa 1985. |

On a less stupid note.... does anybody that frequents this site know how to "team" two internet connections?
I've been trying to do this on my new computer with a Gigabyte P55 board with dualing Realtek LAN chipsets. At my place I've got a T1 line and a DSL with a fixed IP address. I just can't get them to work together to "double" my bandwidth:( |

Ballmer..... is Ballmer.
Longhorn, in the way it was conceived was innovation; later they decided it was not achiveable; a reset came and Vista was rushed out. The difference between Longhorn and Vista is that the former was a real innovation, maybe even a revolution, the latter was an evolution of the previous OS. If they had not rushed Vista out it could have been an excellent OS. Let us be clear: W7 is an evolution of Vista, without it W7 would not have been possible. Said that I have a partition where I still have Longhorn and in spite of all the issues.... it is like the Jetsons...... |

oldog - What your trying to accomplish will not really work without bgp (trying to share two isp's), or some other networking device specifically designed to do this upstream. I'd just advise you put one machine on one isp and a second on the other with each using a separate gateway address, else your just going to end up with two nics in your system one set to the use one isp and one set to use another (no teaming) - which you can do but, your outbound surfing traffic is only going to use one of them is most cases, this may work for you if your though if you are trying to use the same machine to say host something you want to use one pipe, while you want your surfing traffic to use another.
Ballmer stating what the rest of the world had figured out prior to Vista's release, minus the innovation word, that early on they wasted most of the first two years of dev time. |

| Latch, I think Ballmer has to call it "innovation" because of all the software patents the OS team took out during that period ;-) |
