Despite numerous obvious shortcomings, the iPad is sold out. The device will likely continue to do well for the rest of the year, as people embrace it because is not a traditional tablet computer, but rather a utilitarian device that does all sorts of new things. This stems from the fact that tablet computers have traditionally been laptops without a keyboard. And the most successful tablets of the past—convertibles—eventually added the keyboard back on. | ||

I hate to say it, but unless HP botches it thoroughly, I think their slate will do better once people discover it covers the major missing items in the iPad (flash, usb, camera, full OS, etc...)
But, from what I've read, the HP Battery Life is going to be a problem. People are talking of using an iPad for days on end and having plenty left over. Apparently the 10 hour batter life quoted is quite understated. |

IMO to make Win7 work on a slate a solid touch centric NUI has to be put on top of it for the casual use times. I'm glad to see HP taking the reigns on that front but frankly I can't imagine they'll do insanely well.
MS needs to take the lead and push out something like the WP7 metro UI to run on a slate like WMC runs on top of Win7 on a htpc. Allow the user to dump out of the NUI to use the computer and have the "Home Button" relaunch the metro ui if not already in focus. Battery life too is a big deal for me but 5 hours of hard usage... it's not to shy of where it really should be. I want to know if it's running nvidia's new mobile gpu... that thing is ridiculous. Needless to say... I'm most likely buying an hp slate if I can get my hands on one to test drive it's responsiveness. |

@#2 - I would say 300,000 on day one is a success....anyone have a solid source on total Kindle sales?
-[UPDATE] - SiliconValley.com says 3 million kindles sold since day one (November 21, 2007) So...10% of Kindle total sales in one day? Yes that is success...wonder what the 3g model will do? I agree with #2. I've used tablets for years. It's a niche product. It'll just take some time for people to figure out they've been shucked. |

I agree...it is a niche market, that's why I haven't bought one. But I do see how this niche product could end up in every family/living room around the world. Seems like every kid I see has a laptop now.... Why not drop the laptop and go with an iPad? Hardly any boot time, not as fragile in my opinion, lighter, better battery, and can what they need it to do, and some cases do it better (music, video, pictures) I guess niche is a relative term..just depends on how big that niche market is. As for tablets...your right....they have been around for years...but you and no one else uses them. We have 15 of them in our org. they do not get used as tablets even though the software is made for tablet entry, they are too heavy, and clumsey and in the end are just a laptop with a fancy screen. We will investigate iPad as a replacement for these tablets once they come up in our replacement schedule. And who knows, maybe release our software on the App Store and make a buck or two... I am not a fanboi, but I do use both Apple and PC products.... I see the iPad as success and if I had money I would bet on it... |

Well, I have a Tablet, a convertible one, and I use it as my laptop since they became available.
Granted at the beginning the handwriting was really lacking but it got better and better. They were also severely underpowered and way overpriced, no questions about it but, again, things have improved and keep getting better and better. I will replace my aging Toshiba M400 soon and I will buy another Tablet; a 10" screen is the perfect size for me, I do not need a bigger, widescreen laptop. I see the Tablet like a laptop with added functionalities and this is the main reason for me to stick with them. As for these "slate" ones I mainly see them as an evolution of the old MS "Mira" concept: a smart screen borrowing some of the functionalities of a laptop but, besides very specific cases like Doctors or people working in big warehouses, not as a replacement for a laptop. I do not care for the iPad because it lacks the ability to run Outlook for example; I would surely buy something with a 8" touchscreen, able to remotely connect to my desktop or my server, browsing the internet, and with built-in capabilities to control all my place appliances: TV, DVD player, alarm, curtains, shutters, AC, lights etc. etc. What I would not buy is a slate running a smartphone OS, no matter if Apple or WP7. Actually I really hope that the Courier will not use WP7 as it has been rumored lately because it would kill all my interest in the device. |

Why would you buy a iPad when you can do all the things you mention on a much smaller and more functional device i.e. a cell phone? |

Well, as I said I am not interested in the iPad, at least not as it is now; as for cell phones I use a HTC HD2 therefore one with a big screen. it is all right to check emails, appointments and a lot of other things but I do not see it, unfortunately I would add, as a replacement for my Filofax agenda; simply put the screen is too small and this is the reason why I am eagerly looking for the Courier.
Same story for a "Slate" device: my idea is a device with a GUI showing the floor map of my apartment and the ability to filter what appears on it; again: lights, curtains, speakers, AC units etc. and be able to control all of them from the device. Also be able to browse my DVD library and control my TV to play the one I choose on it. While I watch TV I would occasionally check my email and/ or some web site. All the previouslu mentioned activities can be done on a cell screen but, IMO, the limitd screen size make it a less than optimal experience.
