Along with Microsoft's unveiling of the Windows Phone 7 software last week came Microsoft's unveiling of its new strategy in the mobile business. Instead of letting phone manufactures install its operating system willy-nilly on whatever hardware they want, Microsoft is imposing minimum specifications and restricting customization that steps on the overall look and feel of Windows Phone 7. Some industry followers feel it was a good move, bringing Microsoft's mobile strategy more in line with Apple's hot tactics, while others feel it may leave original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) out in the cold. | ||

| I believe this is further evidence of the hard lessons learned from Vista. limit the scope to capable hardware to ensure a positive user experience. |

| Agreed #1. Their Laissez-Faire attitude about the end user experience in certain markets has scared them. Focusing that experience more through licensing requirements is a step in the right direction. Still give people a fantastic platform to build on but ensure that platform has a higher baseline user experience. |

| I love this approach. I am sick and tired of my carrier and HTC locking my phone and not letting me upgrade or have access to bug fixes. |

#4, If I may offer some insight http://www.excellcommunications.com/ - we've supported and actively work with all carriers. From the infrastructure level to devices, software and services.
Everything is going to change this year and for the better. The relationship between end users and their devices is going to be liberated in several contexts and in all but limited set of enterprise circumstances, end users, supported by services providers, are going to drive. The days of device lock-in/out are over. The days where services gateways controlling things (Apple), are beginning. In this vital context, Microsoft has already demonstrated that Zune (only one tile on one HUB on WPH7S) will be open to all. - can you imagine Apple allowing alternative stores access at the device level within iTMS?!?!?!?? My advice to all would be: "enjoy this new day and the new Microsoft" '''they really did mean it when they told me: "What is ours is yours!" So guys, get set... federate the heck out of every service you can get your hands on... it is going to be great! |

#5: Iketchum you could be right and I hope so although, as I previously stated, I am not so confident that Carriers will loose their grip on customers so quickly; and the reason for my skepticism is that there is a price to pay for this to happen and I am not sure people are ready to pay full price for a device.
As for Apple being an example of "services gateways controlling things" well, I wonder how many of the iPhones sold in the US are jailbroken; my guess: the vast majority. It is interesting to see MS inspired by the famous Cicero phrase " What is thine is mine, and all mine is thine" but I am afraid that corporations are not, and to be honest cannot be, driven by the same principles that inspired Cicero so for now I wait to hear and see what will be announced in March before formulating an opinion about this new Windows Phone 7 "universe". #6, Good observations - are you going to be at Mix this year? I plan to be there with some of our guys. It promises to be among the best yet.

#7: No I will not; I am neither a developer nor I work in the software industry like the majority of you...... I sell eatable oils :-)
