‘Life in Motion’ Drives Development of New Windows Phone 7 Series | |

Few segments of the technology industry have changed as dramatically in recent years as mobile phones. Far beyond texting and talking, today’s phones provide a palm-sized mobile office, entertainment center and communications hub. Along with the striking evolution of mobile technology, Senior Vice President Andy Lees of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business says the most important part of the market for mobile phones is the people who use them. Lees is unveiling Microsoft’s new mobile platform this week — Windows Phone 7 Series. Partners have already started building the new Windows Phones, the first of which are expected in the market by the 2010 holiday season. With the launch this week, Lees views Microsoft’s presence in the space in a very different light. The platform, he says, is so new and different that “in many respects we are basically a new entrant into the market for these powerful phones.”

Looks good. At least they have basically admitted they have had to scrap most of their previous work to actually get back into the game so to speak and admitted their Windows Mobile os was becoming a far too dated system that still basically looked like their first release of it. They'll clearly dump most support for devices other than 7 series now too.
Looks good as I said - more competition can only be good for all devices, and it was about time Microsoft made themselves part of the competition again. Still not a fan of the wasted space in the UI though but dropping the Windows Mobile name was probably their best move, as no consumer really wants that association anymore! | They might have a shot at the iPhone monopoly with this. I like what I see so far, especially the Xbox Live integration and the People Hub (and Calendar) is tight. |

Personally I think, from what I've seen so far, they've done a terrific job. For me, the Zune integration is the #1 reason I'll most likely switch back to WinMo. The Zune service and client is the best kept secret around apparently.
A few things still remain to be shown: 1. Silverlight & .Net Support - You'd assume it will run a full CLR host and Silverlight but nothing official yet 2. Multi-Tasking - Again you'd assume this will exist but yet to be officially discussed. 3. Access to Shell - Access to the CE OS underneath to run apps and custom software to me is not something they should overlook. 4. Flash & Silverlight Browser Support - Please god. |

#6: Do you use the Zune subscription service? I am asking because a friend of mine does and lately he was complaining that a lot of music suddendly disappeared; apparently the "owners" decided to pull it out for some kind of disagreement with MS.
Personally I do not own a Zune or any other MP3 players and I do not care for the subscription model: I always bought only DRM free music and store it at home so I am not affected by providers second thoughts; lately I began to drop CDs and went back to my first love:vynil. |

#7, Fritzly, regardless of whether you have a Zune Pass subscription, the Zune 4.2.x software is great. It is perhaps the best media management software out there and works as well without a Zune.
Similarly, you do not need a Zune Pass to use the Zune Marketplace, or any other DRM free media title. You can adjust the Zune software to monitor any folder on your computer, or your network. You may also use media within the the Zune Collection on media center extenders and Xbox. In the same way you may put content on a Zune that is purchased elsewhere - and any combination of the above. One thing to note is that in IE 7/8's " Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings <button> clear the checkbox for automatically detect settings (this will greatly speed search within the Zune software - regretfully.... there is no way to do this in the Zune video marketplace on Xbox 360, which uses the same IE derived engine and can be slow as pond water when navigating tiles (even when static addressing is used). Regardless, give a Zune HD a test at a store to understand only one "HUB" that will be on Windows Phone 7 Series devices. It's quite remarkable and very easy to use - even 'fun' as they suggest. Finally, YES, Windows Phone 7 Series WILL support multi-tasking, in addition to a specialized form of suspend and instant resume - and in addition to continuous streaming of multiple sources of data and updates that will, as Exchange and Mesh do, "Poll" with the host servers supporting the service. In the context of "sync" it is the best of all worlds and sets the bar very high for all others. Sync and Push both take on much broader meaning - to/from many services simultaneously. Really finally, YES, you can side load apps - independent of the marketplace - you can even fog out your own abd via two simple methods, load away to your hearts content. That said, the new tools will enable one to develop their own tiles and HUBs and add to those that are on the device. It is very fun to develop for and like pushing your own games to Xbox via XNA, it is extremely easy to do - so the deep geek guys moaning about being locked out are BS and simply have not worked with it at all. I have over 50 apps on my Zune HD and only 12 came from the Marketplace. |

Yes Zune 4.2 is excellent; I installed it after you posted about a while ago now it has I basically replaced Media Player as a hub for my media. As for Windows Phone 7 I really hope that you are right and it will support both multi-tasking and apps acquired outside marketplace. The presentation made in Barcelona did not cover a lot of things but as Mr. Belfiore stated in an interview on Channel 9 the OS is not finalized yet so hopefully when the RTM status will be achieved we will see WP 7 in all its glory. Personally I like the new UI as long as I will be able to shuffle the position of the hubs. I ran away from FB after two weeks and I cannot care less for it or any other of the so called "social media" apps. |

#9, Yes, you can "Promote" or demote any tile you wish. Just as you can pin playlists, or anything else on Zune, you can make it as you wish. The frameworks are fun to dev in and very simple. I love them and have had a lot of fun this year working with them.
You're going to really dig what is coming - and dual boot tablets and slates that run either Windows Phone 7 Series, or Windows 7 will surely delight you and likely guys like Oldog. Tech Larry will of course hate them (but that is part of his charm - he has to be an old Navy Chief - tough with a soft center). We're working on two new things - slates that dock and flip between WinPH7 and 7 and large panels that run WinPH7 as an embedded OS. Hardware designs now, as we wait on the new OS and clearance to run it this way. |

According to the leaked documents obtained by WMPoweruser, the operating system (officially dubbed Windows Phone OS 7.0, or WPOS7.0 for short) will be built on a mix of Silverlight (Microsoft competitor to Adobe's Flash), XNA (the loop-based multi-platform game development tools previously used on the Xbox 360 and Zune), and the .NET Compact Framework. Sounds right. |
