I know most people out there use MSN Messenger for their IM, but I am sure some of our viewers are AIM users, so this story is for you: AOL Time Warner failed to properly fix a security hole in its AOL Instant Messenger application, leaving its users vulnerable to a new way to exploit the same flaw, a security researcher said this weekend. The current incarnation of the bug could have been just as dangerous as the previous version, publicized in January, allowing malicious AIM users the ability to execute any program on a vulnerable user's computer, said Matt Conover, a hacker with a security research group known as "w00w00." "This is almost identical to the problem we found originally, and that's saddening," he said. "By using a slightly different method, we are able to get around the filtering they used to protect against the last flaw." | ||

Actually, most people do not use MSN...they use AOL / AIM. Wishful thinking on your part I suppose. I use neither as I do not chat online, but please get your facts straight. MSN is a distant third in the ISP wars and will never be more than an also-ran in this arena. They know it...do you? |

| On a related/unrelated note, Apple is previewing iChat--the first program allowed by AOL to interoperate with AIM without reverse-engineering. I don't really use IM much but when I do--it's a feeware app that can connect to most the systems (MSN, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, etc...) I do not know a single person using MSN. |

#7, AOLTW actually is being forced to use an upcoming open standard for instant messaging per one of the requirements for the AOL and TW merger.
And just for the record, my family uses MSN and my friends you AOL, so it really depends on who you are talking to. #2, distant 3rd my ass, maybe in just the US, but MSN has a much bigger user base outside the US than AOL does, and is pretty close to tied in the US. #5, no MSN is popular because it simply blows all the competition out of the water from a quality standpoint. MS messenger is tied to AIM in terms of number of users.
Most people I know tend to be with MSIM. The few who are not use ICQ. |

I think the key to MS winning the Instant Message wars is to go after the colleges.
I work at one, and I find MSIM to be better than AIM but you won't find the students using it at all. Why because when they got to college AOL had 2 reps handing out free AIM CD's. Our network actively is AIM only, but every once in awhile you see MSIM but its so small its trival. MS should really go after the schools and then they would win and save me the hassle of explaining this new flaw(although I know MS has flaws too[tons of them]) to all of the students who sent me e-mails asking about it-"Duh, whats the flaw and why aren't you network guys fixing it?" | I would use Trillian, but it is a pile of crap. They don't conform to any sort of UI (graphical or otherwise) standard. |
