I think I have a pretty bad-ass WHS Server...
Intel E6700 on a BadAxe 2 Motherboard. 2GB RAM. 6 Terabytes of WD Green Drive Storage goodness. All housed in a gigantic Lian Li V2000B Case. Wasn't initially intended as such. Just my normal rotation of computers as I build a new desktop once or twice a year, and the leftover parts gave me the above Server. I think it's like 20 times more powerful than the typical OEM WHS LOL |

#1, Purdy slick.
How have you extended it? Media library? Films? Whole house distribution? We're putting together some demos and would welcome any ideas others may have about what they have done. |

I've generally steered clear of WD in favor of Seagates for quite some time. How's your failure rate been? I think I got bit by the crap Dell sells for too many users at different companies so maybe I'm being paranoid. What about the rest of you... what manu do you prefer? |

#3, They all have their down cycles... a few years ago WD had some serious issues with idle but parity and drives falling off low cost RAID solutions.
Recently, Seagate had their troubles with the R11 series - many failed drives. R12 series are okay again and not affected. WD Black and Green RE3 based drives have been excellent and trouble free. Sooner or later one or another will have a bad spate of controllers and or firmware and hose builders again and for a time we'll move off of that line and onto the one that works. We're in WD SaS and SATA II's now, but for years after WD had their turn in the toilet, went with Seagate (until they screwed up). For laptops it we use all Hitachi 7200 RPM's. We've yet to move to SSD at all - waiting for better performance, lower costs and TRIM support across a wider number of competitors. |

Haven't really extended it much yet. It's doing it's job as a backup server and remote access, so for now that's all I need. It does stream my music to my XB360 as well. I want to have all 1000 of my DVD's online and streamed, but I haven't found the best solution for that yet. #3, I used to use Seagate until about 2 years ago. I had not had an HD failure in 10-12 years. Then over 2006-2008 I had six Seagates fail. At one time I had 14 Barracuda's running in various machines around the house. Then came the 500GB Firmware Fiasco. Then then even worse 1.5TB Firmware Fiasco. Enough was enough. I now use WD Velociraptors in my desktops, and Green drives in my DVR boxes and server. No failures yet. I still have two 320GB Barracuda's in one QNAP NAS, and two 500GB Barracuda's in another QNAP NAS. Those are my last 4. When they are gone, that is the last for Seagate here. Until the tide turns again LOL |
