C# striking a chord with programmers | |

Microsoft's new C# programming language is gaining in popularity, with usage nearly doubling in the last six months, a new study shows. C# is Microsoft's new Java-like language and a crucial piece in the software company's .Net Web services strategy, in which software is made available over the Net to be accessed by multiple devices, such as PCs, cell phones and handhelds. Twelve percent of all North American software developers have begun using C#, up from 7 percent six months ago, according to a new survey by market research firm Evans Data. The firm also predicts that the number of programmers using C# will double to 24 percent in the next year. The majority of developers using C# are only dabbling with the new language, however. Most current C# programmers are using the new language for less than 20 percent of their development work, choosing other languages for the brunt of their work, the survey of about 800 developers showed. | ||

More proof that CNET/ZDNet writers really don't have a clue.
"C# is Microsoft's new Java-like language and a crucial piece in the software company's .Net Web services strategy..." Um, actually, it's not. The CLR, the FCL, XML... THOSE are crucial parts of .NET. C# is a nice language to go with a great platform, but it is certainly not crucial. It appears that people still think that .NET *is* C#. Or that C# *is* .NET. Articles like this certainly don't help the situation. The fact is, Microsoft created C# *in addition* to .NET for two reasons: 1.) They wanted a language designed specifically for .NET. 2.) They wanted a language that would attract developers currently using Java. C# is the answer to both desires. |

Personally, I'd be a LOT happier if they would stop with all this "Windows Only" and adopt a more platform-neutral view of the Web and .NET.
Java is a very successful cross-platform lanquage, and that bugs the hell out of Microsoft. TL |

Actually no. What bugs Microsoft is that Windows developers are not able to use Java because it has been crippled by Sun. Such a nice language grammar, wasting away... |
