Microsoft has had an uphill battle with its Zune, trying to crack into a market dominated by the Apple iPod, which set the standard for portable digital music players. The original Zune faced performance problems, anti-Microsoft backlash and a host of other hurdles, but Microsoft is confident the Zune HD has enough bells and whistles to break the curse. As Microsoft readies to unleash the Zune HD on the portable music and video-hungry masses, here are five reasons we think the Microsoft Zune HD will be the first true rival to the Apple iPod. | ||

#1, The Zune Social is pretty smart and it's connected to user profiles and more importantly, the Zune Marketplace. This environment is facilitated by "mixed view" which is a means to discover new music and media.
Mixed View by itself works very well - the user right clicks any item and related music and media is associated with it and may be reviewed and immediately downloaded. Users find that they mix their way through hundreds and thousands of titles and artists - downloading them with their Zune Passes as they go. Since it costs no more to do so, the results allow one to explore new things without worry or risk of wasting money. Seeing what your friends and family are interested in is easy and mixed view allows the user to quickly find similar titles, or artists influenced by them (as an example). For parents supporting their kids using their Zune Pass, it is a good way to understand what their interests are - not just to keep up with whether or not material is appropriate for their age, but also to understand what is important to them. I have found that by understanding what is important to older kids and why, is a good way to see their perspectives and help them transition through the many phases they go through as they mature. There has not been a Zune that included brown since the very first models came out in 2006 and even then the coloring was not fixed - it included a double-shot color effect with a translucent green-yellow for brown models and a blue for black models. The effect was interesting and reacted with light. The materials weren't cheap either - not paint, but color mixed in with the PMP's casing material. It was a good first effort and the devices, unlike those from competitors, have been continuously updated and remain fully supported (beats being abandoned). |

Guys, I hate to say it, but I think the interface sucks :(
And I really (really!) wanted this one to be great. It looks like the interface was designed for a screen 4 times bigger than what you have to work with. |
