Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that it is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22. To reach that milestone, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month, Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said in an interview. Gents,
How big an installation will Win7 be on my puny 80Gb SSD. Will it be bigger than Vista x64? I'm already thinking that the minimum size of any desktop disk is about 120Gb; but, yikes, the 160Gb Intel SSD still weighs in at over $600. |

Well my W7 64 RC folder is 13.4 GB; of course it does not mean that RTM will be as big. I assume they have more telemetry stuff in the RC than what will be in the RTM...... or it could be the other way around, who knows.
Furthermore my C drive is 90GB; with W7, Office 2007, Avast QB 2009, iTune ( I know, I know...), MS Money, Live Mesh, SBS 2008 client folder and Live I still have 54 GB of free space so you should be OK although I do not know what programs you use. Granted I have another partition for data that is 300 GB plus other two 300GB HDs each. |

oldog: Windows 7 is so good that your 80-GB SSD will grow to a 160-GB SSD it'll be so excited.
In this reality 80-GB is more than enough for Win 7n and your program files. Why not buy a couple of 500-GB eSATA drives for external RAID 1 file storage for about $150, total? SSD is great for boot and program launches, But is currently too costly for simple data storage. |

Oldog, it is best to be concerned less with Windows' foot print and understand your storage usage requirements in the context of how you use a particular machine - recognizing that one does not use all machines one may have in the same way.
Assess how much data you use and for what purposes - http://windirstat.info/ is a great free too one may use to visually interpret how they are using disc storage. Do consider how long you have been running each machine and how/if you archive older content. Also, Windows Vista/7 usage grows dramatically over time - as hibernation cache files and volume shadow copy snapshots grow in number relative to how much data you have stored on your machine's drives. While understanding Windows 7's foot print is a good start, one's disc usage requirements are more complex. ***One thing about an SSD that is really nice is that unlike conventional hard drives, one does not start to lose performance when the drive becomes fuller. #3, Never fiddled with RAID but there is goodness in the SSD. Boots very fast. Huge programs load fast. I mean really fast. So. Hard. To. Go. Back. To. My. Other. PCs. |

I have Win2k8R2 on a 97.5GB partition with 67.9GB free.
Office, VS2008, SQL 2008 etc etc. Windows itself is 16.3GB of which 10GB are the winsxs and installer folders. |

| Windows 7 RC uses approximately 9.5 to 10.5 GBs of disk space, I think about 10.5 GBs for Windows 7 RC x64 Microsoft recommends a minimum 18 GBs of disk space. |
