Microsoft confirms Zune HD coming this fall | |

Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed its plans to take on the iPod Touch with a new, touch-screen Zune that will be able to surf the Web, play high-definition movies, and tune in to digital radio. The Zune HD, which will be available in the U.S. only starting this fall, features an HD Radio tuner as well as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen, Microsoft said. It is based on Windows CE and will use a version of Internet Explorer customized for its touch screen, Microsoft said. | ||

HD Radio through the air would be a first and the fusion (finally) of Xbox Marketplace and Zune Marketplace is more than welcome.
The big item however, is the games marketplace and XNA. That one is going to make it the device of choice for many people. And apps? Oh my. Based on CE it has quite a library already and many are the business applications that have needed to break out from the confines of Windows Mobile phone device designs to really shine. Zune HD has a real shot at an upset against the iPod Touch. Its edgy design will appeal to men in ways the rounded effeminate look of the touch may not. The brushed metal will last well, too. And Chris, you did read the part where it was in fact HD, right? |

At least it's not as fugly as the current generation of Zune's which come in every shade of "poo" (quite fitting really!) but I still think that you and your kids are the only ones who will be using this - aside from the kids of Microsoft's employees and specifically the management who aren't allowed to use anything else. Whilst the design is very iPod-esque... at the end of the day it looks like it was designed by engineers for engineers... those "edgy" lines that you believe are masculine are nothing more than nerdy... which is great as long as that's your target market. To non-nerds the bottom of the Zune HD looks plain ugly, blocky, square (and square isn't cool - regardless of what the other kids in your advanced math class told you)... a bit like all the hideous Windows Mobile devices up until the iPhone came on the scene (even though it seems to have taken over a year since then for those to improve). To be fair, the black version looks a lot better as the bottom isn't as obvious!
As for HD Radio and OLED etc, they're nothing different from what's been rumored for the iPhone (and I'd assume iPod Touch - but I don't keep up with that... to me it's sort of a device that doesn't really need to exist - but obviously there's some market for it!). Of course all of those are rumors as Apple don't like to release anything until they have the actual device ready so we'll find out shortly what, if any, upgrades have actually been made to their devices. After all, it's no coincidence that this Zune HD "news" about a product that doesn't yet exist, is being floated shortly before the next iPhone/iPod Touch announcement. In regards to the HD, the author also states "...tune in to digital radio". AKA "HD Radio". Anyone with a factory aux jack in theyr car could get HD Radio.

Where did that perspective come from? How about it is real simple... like a lot of guys like knives and many things retro - like tools, or electronics that reflect on an earlier time. Ya know.. not everyone liked "Streamlining" when it was all the rage back in the day - some people like straight lines. So Apple's design aesthetic isn't for everyone.. big deal. |
