The Cloud Computing Interoperability Forum released a white paper asking that all cloud apps, services and offerings be based on open standards. The paper, with either apologies or kudos to Karl Marx, is named the "Open Cloud Manifesto." Microsoft shot back, apparently even before the document was released. Microsoft argues that the document is far from egalitarian, and is in fact one-sided, allowing a small cadre of vendors to control the means of cloud production and therefore acquire all the das kapital thus created. | ||

| I must admit I'm confused. I thought MS was all behind interoperability and open standards these days. And they never seem to have a problem when they are the sole entity in control of a technology, but somehow it's "one-sided" when someone else has control, even if it's an open body that MS could join if it felt like it? Yes, I hope this isn't a repeat of the nonsense MS pulled with the whole OOXML stench at ISO. I know I'm pretty sick of their "My way or the highway" attitude. |

| I don't get the cloud manifesto. It is just a call to a conversation. There really is no action, and the real intent of where the manifesto is going to go is not specified. I don't really see any need to sign it in its current form. It is not a standard, nor will it be a call to a standard. All it says is that cloud providers need to be open, but there is no definition of what open is. Do they expect that an application built for Azure will be 'portable' to Google App Engine (it won't be)? What is more standard than using http as the protocol? There are many open standards for web service authentication and authorization - is having a "manifesto" going to change anything for the better? I just don't see the fuss over the current manifesto as it really does not say anything today. |

| #5: Yes, parkkker, and black is white and up is down. Why does MS always insist on choice when it's not the one controlling everything? Hmm?? When MS has the reins, it's one (MS) standard is best for everyone. When MS is on the outside looking in, even by their own choice like they did when they joined the ODF working group but refused to participate, suddenly a second option becomes their mantra. MS is quite adept at speaking out of both sides of their mouth depending on their whims. It's so transparent. |
