Small, mobile and affordable PCs, often referred to as “netbooks” or “mini-notebooks,” were one of 2008’s hottest technology trends. Virtually unknown a year ago, these PCs pushed the design innovation envelope by enabling easy Web surfing, instant messaging, general-purpose computing (e.g., e-mail, social networking and photo sharing) and media playback in one small, ultra-portable device. when you add -n versions and x64 versions.... yikes, it can look bad.
But... when you really break it down for all but emerging markets, you get home and pro and for those that want things like BitLocker, Secure Startup (Conerstone) and Windows Services for Unix, there is Ultimate. Emerging markets get Home Basic in addition to starter, which is a nice sign that said markets are indeed emerging. Enterprise is unique to SA customers - nuff said there. Now here is the weird one for me... of all of the Ultimate and Enterprise features, Secure Startup is the most important to me and I always wonder why it is not standard for all versions of Windows Vista and 7. Now expected prices... 299 and 399 for Ultimate? most will go for Pro, I think. TL is gonna be pretty PO'd |

| One would need to be not in their right mind to install Ultimate on a netbook, unless they have Action Pack. Why pay more for the OS than the PC? |

Just look at how much those like AWBrian pay for Apple PC just to run OSX (and then, like that is not too much already, they pay for Windows too :) |

#4 - Win 7 Home Premium will run software just fine and will be preinstalled in many netbooks at "no" cost to the consumer. Paying "double" to run Ultimate on a netbook makes no sense, unless one has money to burn or "free" access to Ultimate. This post was edited by bobsireno on Wednesday, February 04, 2009 at 09:52. |

Windows 7 Ultimate is not going to be marketed in the same way as Windows Vista Ultimate was, which caused me to wonder why they would continue using the name at all. W7U will be marketed on a select basis.
For nearly all user types there are two choices: Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional Some of us will want and acquire Windows 7 Ultimate, but likely never use many of its added features beyond limited exploration, and or evaluation. I just don't see the big deal here at all. We've got two clear choices that most likely, each of us and our customers will stick with and choose amongst. Are we manufacturing an issue for some reason I am not seeing - help an old man out here; where's the issue? Netbooks - assuming they are Intel Atom based, do and will continue to run either of the two Windows 7 versions above well. |

| Agree with bobsireno ... netbooks are just that .. netbooks. If you want to run Ultimate, don't buy a netbook! I would think Starter Edition would be just fine. All you need on a netbook is a browser and room on your drive for a cache, browser plugins, and a few pics or vids. |

#7, #5: You people assume too much about other people's needs.
What if I wanted to use Direct Access and/or BitLocker on my netbook? I'd say it's reasonable to want those features on any portable computer. This post was edited by gonzo on Wednesday, February 04, 2009 at 17:07. |
