Windows 7 is shaping up to be an awesome OS. It's everything people wanted Vista to be and more. Which is exactly why Microsoft should give it away—or offer it dirt cheap—to Vista users.
Windows 7 is the solution to Microsoft's Vista problem, which is really a nasty hydra of a problem. Let's not pretend that this isn't the case. There are three major heads to the beast: Consumer perception of Vista as an abysmal failure and a crappy OS (hence, Mojave); the use of XP instead of Vista in increasingly popular netbooks; and the critical lack of Vista interest from the business community.

I agree 100%. I will, however, pay shipping & handling.
I paid $400 for Vista "Ultimate", and was never provided the Ultimate experience as promised by Microsoft.

#1 I thought you were a Technet subscriber. The OS is free.

Give it away? Hardly. I expect they'll raise the price. Get ready for Windows 7 Ultimate... only $500. Ultimate comes with a purdy new *exclusive* skin for the Start button and a Tic-Tac-Toe game.

As I said in an earlier post I'll take it for free. I know it'll get more use than any free linux distro I've ever tried.

#2 Total BS. Technet licenses give you the right to evaluate MS software, not use it for productive purposes. We've missed your idiocy around here, scholl must have been out, huh?

#5 "Evaluate full-version commercial products without time limits ..."
Insults are no substitute for rational argument.

Current Vista users should get a steep upgrade discount. $49 Upgrade price would be reasonable with $199 for new. I don't know if this consumers can stomach a $399 OS in this economy especially with so many alternatives out there.

Umm, ya..... No. Microsoft is in the business of making money. Why should they give away their product? "Good will for making a bad OS?" Well, by that logic, they should have given away XP due to Windows Me being a complete and utter failure. And they should have given Windows Me away because 98 was crappy.... (Ad nauseum)..... Once u start down that path, it's hard to find a reason to stop.

A benefit to being a monopoly is that you don't have to give a rat's ass about the economy, how crappy your last product was, or anything else. They'll charge what they please and people will pay it.

You heard it here first: (a wild guess)
There will be three versions of Windows 7, yet, only three (3).
1) Windows 7 for Netbooks with a UMPC'ish UI and quick access to the most desired apps. This makes sense, as the UMPC team, if you will recall, really moved this entire area of computing forward a good bit ago (the hardwre was not there, but the UI was as was the idea).
2) Windows 7 - which is more componentized than any previous version of Windows, will allow the components people need to be installed.
3) Windows 7 Enterprise - for SA customers.

I remember you telling us that you purchased a lower end version of Vista and applied a crack to open up the Ultimate version.

#14: Not quite. I had an HP that came with Vista H.P. and I wiped it for XP. I also had an older system with XP that I put the NoPE release of Vista on just to poke around the OS. Now I'm running an Acer Quad w/Vista H.P. I still don't like Vista after 3 months of use and it pisses me off in one way or another every single day that I use it. It's been very stable, but the guy who re-did Explorer needs to be shot if he hasn't already been. I love having my folder view randomly scrambled depending on the folder contents. I love having Explorer pop up in a tiny window when I've got a huge monitor running a high resolution. I love moving a file, only to have Explorer rejig the folder tree at the exact moment I unclick, thereby turning my file move into an adventure. I love the endless "Are you sure?" prompts for common operations. I love how it can take upwards of 5 seconds to delete a 1K file. I love how if you delete a subfolder, the focus changes to the parent folder but the file view doesn't update with the contents of that folder unless you manually select it even thought it's already selected. I also love having my disk ground into tiny particles every time I resume from sleep. I could go on & on.

I have seen some of the issues you have mentioned but "sleep" is not one of them. It works perfect for me.

#18: Sleep (or hibernate, I'm not sure which) works fine for me, too. Upon resume, it starts thrashing my hard disk non-stop for upwards of 15-30 minutes. I've heard that Vista kicks off its indexing after you resume from sleep. I'm also running a RAID mirror, and the sleep may be screwing up the RAID and forcing a sync between the members in the array. I'm not sure what it is but I know it's certainly very, very annoying.

Ok, let me be clearer...
There will be only three versions.
Windows 7 will be windows 7 Ultimate and all else under it - users/admins will design their images and installs and be able to add/remove features as they wish.
The "netbook" SKU will have a specialized interface designed by the UMPC team - they do great work and get what people want from a tiny computer that is an everyday part of life.

Seriously do people get paid to write this stuff or do they do it for shits and giggles?
Microsoft has shareholders to please - the last thing they're going to do is offer Windows 7 for free regardless of the fact that Vista is a piece of shit.

Latch - the monopoly argument is old, and lame. There are a thousand distributions of Linux(which we are told by many here is the best thing since sliced bread) and Apple OS X. You have choices people! Absolutely no one is forcing anyone to use Windows.
