Hotmail POP3 access on the way: Omar Shahine explains | |

LiveSide: We spent the day today (Jan 13) on campus, talking to some of the people who have helped to bring you Wave 3. In quite a coincidence, one of them was Omar Shahine, who we spoke to last fall when POP3 access was announced. We’ll bring you more from Omar coming up, but we wanted to get this bit out on POP3 now while the news is fresh. Funnily enough, Omar doesn’t actually work on POP, although he has been working on Hotmail, and more recently on some of the social networking aspects of Windows Live, specifically People and Profiles. We just happened to catch him, twice, right when there were POP announcements. | ||

meanwhile... adults have been getting their mail via hosted Exchange, which is up to date no matter where they are or how many clients they have and includes mail, contacts, calendar items, tasks, notes and relevant documents in distributed libraries since 2000 (Forced Encryption over TCP and Outlook Anywhere since E2K3 in August 2003).
Web 2.0... Enterprise 2.0... <Scratch, scratch... where in the heck has everybody been??> And... they've been passing mail objects through external filters for nearly as long and havn't seen a SPAM or false-positive, much less mal-ware in longer than can be remembered. And.... they've been using good partners that manage it all and for one third what others charge. We don't know whether to laugh or cry some days - looking at how sillly our industry press is. |

| I still use AOL because when I sign on, it tells me if I have mail. Can't get much easier than that... |

#2: Is that what adults use? Now I know why Exchange has an R-rating. Tell me, can kids get their mail that way if accompanied by an adult?

| #6: That takes me back... to about 4 years ago. To me, Blue's Clues jumped the shark when Steve left and they brought in the new guy and then added the pink puppy. Now if only I could get my daughter to stop liking the Wonder Pets. |

POP access for free? Really Hotmail, that's pretty spectacular of you.
I wonder if someone at Microsoft finally let the cat out of the bag that Yahoo, Gmail, and many other web based email providers have allowed POP access for years. Gmail (and maybe Yahoo?) even takes it a step further and provides free IMAP access. I don't know who would be excited to get free POP access these days, IMAP seems to be a no brainer. But I guess so does switching to Gmail or Yahoo and leaving Hotmail alone, to die its slow death. :) |

IMAP? Gosh help us... while we support it, we wonder why in the world anyone would want to use it when MAPI is so much better.
We hear pundits who came from POP to IMAP speak of it like it is the second coming... and shake our heads. |
