Windows 7 beta fights with anti-virus programs | |

Users trying the Windows 7 beta who keep their computers safe with McAfee virus protection are in for a bit of disappointment -- and a loss of security. According to a Channel Web report, when you try to run McAfee Total Protection in the Windows 7 beta, an error message pops up. "The version of Windows installed on this machine is not supported. Please refer to the product documentation for a list of supported operating systems."

#1, Actually, there are three AV vendors with active Windows 7 official releases:
Kaspersky Norton/Symantec and AVG I have tried all three and several others. Kaspersky's on Win7 32 bit produced stop errors (BSOD) opposite KL1.SYS Norton's product, while fast and lightweight, is all over the place - constantly in the user's face AVG's is very similar to Norton's, but quite heavy - not the AVG of days past I've also tested ESET NOD32 32 bit and the experience was dreadful - while not intended for Windows 7 per se, many reported using it with success. Its integration to Outlook anywhere, which can be turned off, was only one area that was troublesome... its HTTP scanner and real-time scanners, which must be left on less they pester the user, slow using the web and other networks too much for me. Windows Live OneCare is entirely incompatible as it is being pulled in favor of Microsoft's upcoming free basic AV product - Morro - based upon Forefront Client Security - Morro cannot get here fast enough for me!!! All of the AV products seem to get worse and not better - surprisingly, Norton was the best, but bugged me at every turn - still it was "light" This post was edited by lketchum on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 11:42. |

| #1: Major application vendors typically do not wait until the OS has shipped before they start checking it out and developing new versions of their products for it. MS wants lots of software to just work on launch day. That wouldn't be possible unless developers, especially, top-tier software houses, get access to the code ASAP. |

Symantec is crap for AntiVirus, and even worse for Spyware.
Spyware? HAH! "Cannot quarantine, cannot delete, access denied. I shall now go over in the corner and pee on myself" SAV is utterly useless! |

| Oh, and the first thing spyware does is kick SAV in the nuts and disable it. Why not, it's SO easy to do! |

ESET AV was cleanly installed on a new clean Win7 install. I blew chunks. I dig ESET and inlude it with all SOHO builds - but I no longer will after Morror ships. ESET started off so well, too... UI was ugly, but I liked it as it worked, and it was lightweight and fast. It has done the same as the rest of them... gotten too big.
Symantec was dreadful for years - but just as I said I would on this site, I have been in and remained in their BETA program (since 04) and I can tell you, Norton 360, with a little work, is by far the best thing out there right now. I know.. crazy... but it is true. |

McAfee Enterprise 8.7i installed using compatibility mode on x64 Win 7 and x64 R2 beta and seems to run ok.
